Alyah was first announced to be cast as of the four leads of Mindy Kaling’s HBO Max comedy series, The S*x Lives of College Girls, back in October 2020. But the show only premiered in November 2021, and Alyah only opened up about her role then.
She shared she felt connected to her character Whitney Chase on the show. “She is inherently Black because I am Black. It doesn’t have to preface everything she does. It inherently does, but it doesn’t have to be her entire identity.” she added.
Also, she then went on to talk about Whitney’s relationship with an older man, and how it was blocking her from having a college experience.“I think she has this fear of admitting that something’s gone wrong, for fear of maybe her mom, for fear of maybe public perception.” Alyah said.
Initially, Alyah’s character Whitney had straight hair. But then Alyah pointed out the fact how she would sweat it out every practice if she did have her hair straight. Then after a lot of conversations about how protective hairstyles are your go-to in college, they decided on a new hairstyle.
The other three leads joining Alyah this season were Pauline Chalamet, Amrit Kaur, and Reneé Rapp. All four girls were randomly-assigned dorm roommates at Essex College, with a bundle of contradictions and developing hormones.
