Discovery Channel’s show Deadliest Catch is back with a franchise titled Ice Cold Catch. However, the show is not taking place in Alaska, but instead in Iceland as fishermen try to reel in some of the biggest paydays.
This new documentary follows the diligent Icelandic cod fishing teams as they stake all in the icy waters of the Arctic in search of their fortunes. Rookies from the United States and Britain are on board, thinking they have what it takes to get a piece of the catch. The stakes are high because in order for them to succeed, an American defense contractor Greg Jones, and Caitlin Krause, a British yacht stewardess, must establish themselves as novices in one of the riskiest jobs in the world.
Caitlin is an ex-yacht stewardess working in the United Kingdom before she decided to join the show. Caitlin has given fans snippets of her life as she trains to become an Icelandic longliner ever since she arrived in the country. According to the Marine Stewardship Council, a longliner is a commercial fishing method that involves trailing longer fishing lines connected to nets with baited hooks to draw fish. Depending on what the fisherman wants to capture, the lines can be configured for pelagic (midwater) or demersal (bottom) fishing.
Deadline reported before the premiered, “Discovery U.S. and Discovery Plus are shining a spotlight on Icelandic cod fishing.” Two novice fishermen who want to advance their fishing professions are the focus of the show. Off the coast of Iceland, in the Arctic Circle, these newbies seek to pilot Icelandic longline boats and make their fortune in freezing, treacherous waters.”
In order to accomplish their goal, the two rookie fishermen have to “pass a grueling three-week trial and, if they impress their captains and crewmates with their attitude, endurance, and potential, they may be awarded a place on board through the high season.”
