Who Are Keyla Monterroso Mejia Parents?
Netflix recently released Freeridge, the spin-off show of On My Block on 2 February 2023. The teen drama series tells the tale of Gloria, Ines, Demi, and Cameron, a group of four teenage friends who unwittingly cast a fatal curse upon themselves and brought a slew of terrible disasters upon themselves by tinkering with an odd antique box. The four friends’ journey is explored in the series as they band together to break the curse and get their lives back to normal.
And the actress playing the role of Gloria in the show is Keyla Monterroso Mejia. She is the first-generation American daughter of her parents Juan Monterroso and Chely Mejia who hailed from Guatemala and Mexico respectively. In a very short period of her thriving career as an actress, she has filled her resume with some notable works including HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm in the show’s 12th season.
While speaking to The Post in that regard she also discussed her parents in the paper. Keyla told how her parents rarely speak English and they aren’t familiar with US pop culture. “But they gave me all the support in the world,” she told the Post, “even when they didn’t really understand what I wanted to do or why I wanted to do it.”
She told that most of her family members worked as a barber and they had hoped she would take on the same line of work. “I was the worst barber ever,” Keyla said. She added, “I apologize to anyone whose hair I cut. I was so nervous. I’d start sweating when I had to cut hair.” However, she deviated from the family trade and went on to pursue a career as an actress with no prior experience.
“I wanted to be an actress but it seemed like a faraway dream,” Keyla said. “Then I watched that documentary. It gave me such motivation. I can’t sing or dance but it made me feel there is a place for me in acting — a place for people who look like me. And it might be tough but it’s not impossible.”
Meet Juan Monterroso, Keyla Monterroso Mejia Father
Juan Moterroso is the father of Keyla Monterroso Mejia. Several evenings a week, after spending 12 hours at the barbershop, Juan would drive Mejia to Los Angeles to see her acting coach, Gloria Garayua, and back. Even though she had set everything up herself, she was too nervous to enter the first time they went.
“My dad and I had an argument outside [Garayua’s] place,” Mejia told The Post. “I said, ‘No, I can’t go up to the door, I’m too scared.’ So my dad said, ‘We didn’t come here for nothing. I’ll do it.’ He knocked on this lady’s door and said, ‘This is my daughter. She wants to be an actress. Can you help her?'”
Her dad, Mejia said, is proud of her but fell asleep while watching her first episode of “Curb” because he didn’t really understand it.
