Tommy Thorn, a talented Bristol chef, is one of the four finalists of Masterchef: The Professionals 2023. He decided to enter the competition for mixed reasons.
“I’ve been a huge fan of the show from a very young age and I wanted to push myself to set an example for my son. Getting to finals week is something I am extremely proud of. The competition has been such a learning curve and I’ve enjoyed each and every round,” Tommy told BBC. “It feels like a bit of a dream! The competition has come with many challenges and one that sticks to mind is the pop-up round. To cook for that many people in a new environment is something I’ve not had much experience in.”
Officially, MasterChef The Professionals 2023 Finals Week begun. On December 6, 2023, the four show finalists competed against each other for Chef’s Table. The aspirant cooks must prepare food for a dining room full of renowned chefs. They advanced to the final if they survived the Chef’s Table. However, only three of the four will move on to the following phase.
Charlie, Kasae, and Tom are the four chefs who remain after a preliminary round of 32. Tommy Thorn is working as a head chef in The Ethicurean in Somerset. He was classically trained and has spent more than 10 years working in award-winning restaurants. He began his culinary journey working at Thornbury Castle and also worked at Five Fields and The Frog by Adam Handling.
Though he now finds inspiration in “different cultures, locations, and feelings,” Gordon Ramsay, Marcus Wareing, and Tom Aikens were major influences on him when he initially began pursuing his aspirations of being a chef.
Tommy shared that he lacked direction when he was 16 and worked in a kitchen as a Kitchen Porter. His life changed for good after that as he knew he wanted to be a chef. He says, “It’s the best job could ask for.”
“My cooking passions are constantly evolving and bettering myself is a task I focus on daily,” Tommy told Bristol Post. “Food is so diverse and I believe no one could ever know everything and that’s what I find fascinating. I love big flavors and using every part of each ingredient to prevent wastage. Too much good produce gets wasted.”
Outside of cooking, he loves to spend time with his girlfriend and their son. He takes him to the restaurant, cooks with him when he can, and also enjoys going for a walk.
Fun Fact: In September 2023, Tommy won 3 AA rosettes which marked one of his greatest achievements in his career.
