Why Did Hope Woodard Face A Backlash?
Based in Brooklyn, New York, Hope Woodard is a strategist and content developer. At the moment, she does films for the dating app Bumble. In addition, she has a sizable fan base on TikTok, where her videos have amassed over 27 million likes.
Hope, a former Peace Corps volunteer, is adamant about bringing about change and addresses subjects close to her heart in her videos, such as climate change. Hope Woodard, who holds progressive beliefs, used TikTok to talk about a video she was going to do for Starbucks, which is presently the target of a global boycott.
After the Israel-Palestine conflict erupted on October 7, 2023, the boycott started in November 2023. It started with a now-deleted social media post by Starbucks Workers United, an SEIU-affiliated union, endorsing Palestine amid Israel’s conflict. According to reports, the post said, “Solidarity with Palestine!”
In response, Starbucks lodged a complaint, requesting that the union stop utilizing their trademarks and provide an apology. Starbucks Workers United countersued, claiming that Starbucks “defamed the union by implying it supports terrorism and violence,” and it is seeking a federal court judgment in Pennsylvania that permits the company to continue using its name and a similar emblem. Some customers of Starbucks, outraged by this answer, decided to boycott the company in protest of what they saw as its alleged anti-Palestinian position.
Hope said in a video that she had to finish the video because she had to pay her rent in spite of everything.
“The night I sent in the content is the night I found out about the boycott,” Hope explained. “I knew ethically it was not great and I have to admit this which is embarrassing but I was not in the financial situation to say ‘Hey, I don’t want to do this anymore.”
Despite this, Hope insisted that she hasn’t been visiting Starbucks in observance of the boycott. She even mentioned that she recently chose Krispy Kreme over Starbucks when she was at the airport. This statement, however, confused a lot of people.
One commented, “The Krispy Kreme is sending me. Like babe do you want a medal?” Another said: “It’s the emphasis on Krispy Kreme for me. Like you’re making a sacrifice?”
