Being a part of the Outlast season 2 cast, according to Lafayette native Joseph Malbrough, was nothing short of life-changing, from hunting with his dogs to facing the Alaskan tundra. Joseph claimed to have gained fresh experiences from the journey. For example, he had never flown before, was spending time away from home, and was in an outdoor setting other than Louisiana’s “swamps, bayous, and cane fields.”
“Louisiana is called sportsman’s paradise for a reason,” Joseph told Advocate. “Some of us are natural survivalists, and I have loved the outdoors since I was a kid. I am a true country boy. So this is my element.” The show is a perfect fit for him as he states that he is an adrenaline junkie.
Casting agencies were interested in Joseph’s experiences of catching any slithering, crawling, or swimming animals because he had more than 15,000 followers on TikTok and posted about them. This led to an opportunity for Malbrough to appear on Outlast.
“One day I just started uploading videos and began using my social media like a scrapbook,” he added. “I was always my authentic self and from that I received a bunch of attraction. Netflix casting agents found me through my TikTok and messaged me about the show. I knew then, more than ever, hard work pays off.”
“My biggest thing was adjusting to working with a team,” Joseph added. “Getting along with 15 other strangers became easier than I thought. You think because you’re in a vulnerable place and (have) never been there, you’ll find difficulty in surviving. But when you depend on your teammates for their knowledge to get to the next day, it gets easier.”
In Little Duncan Bay, Alaska, a natural harbor encircled by forest land, competitors are dropped off. Throughout the competition, competitors must contend with a variety of obstacles, including freezing temperatures, persistent rain, a lack of sunlight, and a scarcity of freshwater supplies. Malbrough claimed that after almost a month in Alaska, the weather wasn’t his greatest obstacle.
“Everybody else out there has this cool, ‘ Oh, I climbed this mountain, and I did that,’ and I like to catch and kill stuff. That’s it. So I probably was the least prepared for the show because man, I don’t do stuff like that,” Joseph said.
Joseph claimed that despite his lack of mountain experience, his faith inspired him to take on the task of spending weeks away from his family in the wilderness, where he had to do whatever it took to survive.
He added, “There’s nothing staged about it. Like, you’re really suffering.” He was alone, disconnected from the outside world, and without a phone. Malbrough also claimed to have learnt to slow down, about God, and about himself as a result of that event.
“Before I went out there, I would just go, go, go. Hurry up, hurry, hurry. You know, and thinking I’ve got time. But then, man, missing people and understanding, while I’m out here, I could die. While I’m out here, somebody’s back home could die and I ain’t spent enough time with them,” Joseph added. “So, when I came back, it was just like, man, love all your people. And that’s basically what I’ve been doing… I got to think clearly on what I’m pretty much here for on earth and how I’m supposed to live and the people I’m supposed to love on.”
Seeing his kids’ reactions when they see him on the show—as though he’s a superhero—is, according to Joseph, the best part of being back home. He’s excited to see the show for himself. But more than anything, he can’t wait for his kids to see the series so they can watch their dad in action.
“My kids will always be able to look that up and say, ‘Hey, my dad was on TV,” Malbrough said. “That’s my highlight.”
