In 2022, Sam Smith was spotted with NYC-based designer Christian Cowan which ignited the rumor that they are dating each other. According to DailyMail, he was photographed walking arm-in-arm with Cowan and giving him a smooch on the head. The Daily Mail published the pictures but omitted Cowan’s name, referring to him only as Smith’s “friend” in the intimate photos.
The Unholy singer and the designer appear to have recently gone to get tattoos together. An artist at Australia’s Markd Tattoos’ posted an image of the two and some pals on Monday getting inked. The artist wrote: “At first I didn’t believe it when I got an email saying that Sam Smith would like a tattoo from me. Even on the day, I thought it was just a hoax… One of my proudest moments as a tattoo artist!”
The ink is of a red plant. Although it is unknown how Christian and Sam initially became acquainted, they were pictured together in December 2022 at the White House for the signing of the Respect for Marriage Act alongside Vice President Kamala Harris and President Joe Biden.

They also discussed coming out as non-binary and changing their pronouns to they/them. “It wasn’t a new feeling, it was just the discovery of a language and a community of people that felt the same way,” Sam added at the time. “It’s been lovely. It’s been a process of feeling heard and seen — that there is a space that I can live in and enjoy my life in and feel completely like myself, and be treated as such. I think that’s the difference with the pronouns.”
