The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives star Layla Taylor was previously married to her ex-husband Clayton Wessel.
Layla was just seeing her ex-husband Clayton Wessel when she became pregnant with her now-3-year-old son Oliver. After Layla found out she was pregnant, she and Clayton were married right away because of the severe pre-marital sex regulations of the LDS religion. After the birth of Ollie in 2021, they welcomed Max into the world a year later in 2022.
Taylor recently discussed her divorce from Clayton Wessel, her former spouse. At the age of 19, Taylor tied the knot with Wessel. About August 2023, or about a year before her program debut, their romance ended. Her experiences as a young mother and wife have garnered interest, particularly as she makes her way through life after divorce while being a part of the reality series.
Although it is unknown what caused them to split up after being married young, which is common in the Mormon culture, she has talked about the effects of being divorced.
“Divorce isn’t something that’s encouraged in our church. We’re definitely taught to keep our families together. Families are forever. It’s not something that I think they love, but I’m all for and I’m an advocate for making yourself happy,” Layla shared with TODAY.
Layla was the only mother on the show who is also single, making her stand out as a mother of two sons. Asked about her role in the group by TV Insider, Layla said she enjoyed playing the role of “the single mom on the show” and expressed her hope that “being a single mom may inspire another single mom out there or dad that it is okay:”
Talking about her relationship status, Layla shared with The Direct, “It has been hard. When we first started filming, I was about three months separated from my ex. It was still very fresh emotionally. I love the fact I am the single mom on the show, I feel especially with the church there are a lot of divorces that happen. Especially, because we get married at a very young age in our culture. I hope my being a single mom may inspire another single mom out there or dad that it is okay. You still have a place here.”
Layla explains that she was married for three years — from ages 19 to 21 — and, “I’ve only really ever dated about four people so that’s not a lot of time to discover yourself.”
In an interview with PEOPLE, Layla discussed how the ladies approach the topic of sex and expressed her happiness at being a member of a group of women who are “normalizing” these discussions.
“It’s not something you talk about on the daily. I think it’s something that should be, though. I think it’s something that should be normalized in a marriage — a happy, healthy marriage,” she told the entertainment news outlet. “In my case, I shared that I never experienced an orgasm until very recently, at the age of 23, which is crazy. So I think just having those open conversations will just normalize certain things and make women feel more comfortable and open with their sexuality, which I think is amazing.”
