From Ozark’s Jason Bateman and Aggregate Films, we have yet another Survivor-like show. Netflix’s Outlast, which premiered on the OTT platform on Friday, March 10, features 16 survivalists as they were dropped into the Alaskan wilderness, with one of them having the chance to grab $1 million in cash. Dawn Nelson was one of the contestants of Netflix’s Outlast.

Dawn Nelson On Netflix’s Outlast
Besides Dawn Nelson, the other 15 contestants ready to put their lives at stake in the wild Alaskan environments are Amber Asay, Andrea Hilderbrand, Angie Kenai, Brian Kahrs, Corey Johnson, Javier Colon, Jill Ashock, Joel Hungate, Jordan Williams, Justin Court, Lee Ettinger, Nick Radner, Paul Preece, Seth Lueker, and Timothy Spears.
While all of them have hunted, fished, and foraged in the past, beating the Alaskan wilderness and coming out on the top is a different game altogether. Netflix’s Outlast had only one rule: every survivalist had to be a part of a team to win, which meant their egos were checked in at first.
Dawn Nelson had a particularly difficult life growing up; she spent her childhood riding her horse alone in the woods of Danville, Ferry County, where her parents were fourth-generation cattle ranchers. Her childhood experiences cultivated more than decent survival skills in her.
Even when Dawn became an adult, peace was hardly present in her life. She was diagnosed with breast cancer during her pregnancy and during her job at Airway Heights Corrections Center, Dawn met a grave injury that left her with no feeling in her right hand.
Dawn had previously applied for Survivor. However, when her request failed, one of her friends advised her to try out ‘Outlast.’ Fortunately, Dawn was selected for the show. Ahead of filming the show, Dawn was asked the question “What makes you think you can survive in Alaska?” Her response was: “It was never the surviving part that worried me. It was the social part. I knew if someone pissed me off, I’d make bear bait out of them.”
In the Netflix show, Dawn was in the Delta team comprising of Joel, Jordan, and Paul. She and Joel realized the realities of natural calamities when they saw hunger and cold were turning other contestants into savages.
However, Dawn pushed through challenges, which even earned her praise from the show’s executive producer Grant Kahler. He said, “While all contestants had to have an ‘a baseline of outdoor skills,’ Nelson proved exceptional. She grew up hunting her food, she grew up growing her food, she was so unbelievably knowledgeable that she blew all of us away like…”
Where Is Dawn Nelson Today?
Despite Dawn’s maximum efforts, her team was unable to win Season 1 of Outlast; the team of Nick Radner, Seth Lueker, and Paul Preece emerged victorious.
As we discussed earlier, Dawn had a tough life after being diagnosed with breast cancer during her pregnancy. However, she had to go through many surgeries, including a C-section, a mastectomy, and several reconstructive procedures, to ensure her and her child’s safety. As of today, Dawn was cancer free.
Presently, the reality TV star works at Coulee Medical Center. She spends most of her leisure time with her family and farm animals, including all the horses she adores.

Now onto Dawn Nelson’s personal life, her husband is Kris Nelson. On her husband’s 48th birthday, Dawn took to Facebook on June 27, 2002, to share some sweet words. She wrote, “Happy Birthday to the only man in the world who can make me laugh when my world is crumbling… My best friend and the only person I kinda listen to, Happy Birthday Kris Nelson!!!!”
Dawn and Kris have been married since September 25, 2002. The couple recently celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary by spending some time out in nature.
Dawn and Kris have one beautiful daughter, Laren Nelson. As of 2023, Laren was 17 years old. As per Laren’s Instagram @laren.nelson, she is set to graduate high school this year. Dawn and her husband raise their daughter on a cattle ranch.
