Designer James Ford On Netflix’s Next In Fashion
Netflix’s Next in Fashion returned for its second installment on March 3, 2023, and with it arrived hosts Tan France and Gigi Hadid joined by a lineup of star-studded judges and 12 talented designers including our star James Ford.
“I am so nervous and excited to finally drop the news I’ll be competing as a designer on Next In Fashion™️ szn 2!!!” he promoted the show on his IG.
Likewise, a few days before the premiere, he shared a glimpse of himself appearing on Today’s Show where he talked about making custom suits for the queer community.
Later, he was also seen boasting the Next in Fashion promo clip that had been featured on a billboard in Times Square. “We each pitched in a million dollars to buy this billboard in Times Square,” he wrote.
Joining James for the second installment of Next in Fashion were his co-stars — Amari Carter, Bao Tranchi Courtney Smith, Danny Godoy, Deontré Hancock, Desyrée Nicole, Eliana Batsakis, Megan O’Cain, Nigel Xavier, Qaysean Williams, and Usama Ishtay.

In Feb 2020, James then joined Hedley & Bennett as a technical designer assessing B2B logos and applying to in-house products for either print or embroidery execution. Within 5 months, he got promoted to product developer owning Tech Packs across DTC and B2B SKUs including Construction details, Sketches, Fabrication, Trim Sheets, Pantone Colors, and Art Files. Then, James joined The Elder Statesman as a design assistant for a year whilst also working as a “designer and creative director: at the Rowena Social Club. The last we checked, the designer had quit his job at The Elder Statesman but was continuing it at the latter company.
Rowena Social Club is an inclusive in-group, providing both custom suiting as well as ready-to-wear pieces. Their new collocation was scheduled to release on March 3rd, 2023
Overall, James is a master of custom suiting. But he doesn’t design “your uncle’s obligatory office suits,” but rather crafts suits that “stand for something very, very different.” As a former four-sport athlete, the designer pulls inspiration from the “silhouettes, color palettes, construction techniques, and practicality” of sportswear to inform his approach to suiting, “marrying dichotomies” of the two with every stitch.

Though Designer James Ford didn’t directly state that he was a transgender man, he has often hinted that he is one. “My gender identity is now Aerodynamic Dolphin Noodle tysm,” he once wrote on IG featuring his shirtless body that had undergone surgery to remove breasts. The scars as still visible.
The designer has also been tagged as “trans” by most of his friends.
Back in an interview, James once said, “I’m a person that grew up into a body that wasn’t quite right, that’s about it. I’m lucky to have had the means to fix it. We all deserve to look in the mirror every morning and go, ‘wow… I’m very hot, and I like myself a lot,’ and then move on with our day. I want that feeling for everyone. My experience isn’t unique.”
