Desyrée Nicole On Netflix’s Next In Fashion
Fashion contests have always been fun to watch from the outside, but picture yourself as a designer with the potential to win $200,000 and expand your business by showing off your creations to the entire world. Next up is fashion designer Desyrée Nicole. Nicole wasn’t always interested in fashion; in fact, she had no desire to become a designer. She told Essence, “It was business or ball for me.”
Desyrée was headed to become the next WNBA star before she got into fashion. But as her contract fell through, she realized she had to change course, and fashion naturally became her new area of interest. She told the entertainment outlet, “I wanted to be like Swin Cash, Diana Taurasi, or Oprah…Fashion was a second thought after I moved to NY, and was inspired for sure. I’ve always been into sneakers, but fashion was a different game. I think this shows that it’s never too late to start something new.”
Desyrée is an expert in men’s clothing and thrives on androgynous looks. The creation of a men’s outfit by the designer for the “Royalty” challenge in episode 1 was therefore expected. Even though the judges praised the style and fit, they felt that the wearer should trust the minimalist look because of the overuse of ribbons, studs, and buttons.
Desyrée slayed the “Met Gala” look with her new perspective on the declining culture after putting up a few appropriate clothes in succeeding trials. She made a gorgeous hefty skirt out of her entire boxers and wore it with a stylish white shirt with bell sleeves.
The entire ensemble shouted Met Gala, and Desyrée gained a substantial edge in the following team challenge as a result of her success in episode 6’s task. Once more, she triumphed in the seventh competition, where she paired up with Amari Carter for the “Swimsuit” challenge and came up with two fantastic swimwear ensembles that won over the judges and gave her team the victory.
Desyrée was unfortunately eliminated in the eighth challenge, “Everything Old is New,” where her attempt to channel the 1980s by wearing a pink biker jacket and overcoat didn’t go over as well as she had hoped.
While on the road, Nicole discovered an email from Netflix about the program informing her that she had been chosen to participate. She learned during the filming that she is capable of doing everything she puts her mind to. “The mind and self-belief are powerful tools. It starts with us…I think as humans, we have to know we can do anything,” Nicole said.
She can’t wait for the world to see her outside of her customary background role. Nicole initially wished to maintain her brand’s secrecy, revealing her identity as the designer just last year. She added, “I like people to digest the art on their own, not because I creatively direct it, although that’s a big part of it. People fall in love with you as a person and, in turn, support your work. I’m learning that.”
