A self-taught hip-hopping speech therapist from the Washoe County School District dazzled the judges on “America’s Got Talent.” Working at Sky Ranch Middle School in Sparks, Erica Coffelt recently made an appearance on an episode of the NBC talent competition.
Erica said on social media that she put in an audition for the show in March. “I told myself I was going to do stuff that scared me this year, so why not go big,” Erica said on Instagram. In another post, she added, “When you’re auditioning for @agt and have a day to explore and unexpectedly run into @merrickhanna so you have to film a few videos 🙌🏻🔥.”
She admitted that she almost skipped the audition since she felt her dancing days were behind her. “This has always been my dream and I started doing a dance to entertain my daughter during COVID and she loved it, and I just kept going,” Erica told the celebrity judges. The live audience gave her a standing ovation.
“You are what this show is all about,” After Erica’s performance, the judge commented. Before the speech therapist started dancing, judge and actress Sofia Vergara informed Erica that she didn’t have much hope.
“You are surprisingly very good,” Erica said. “It could have been very bad. It was fantastic.”
