Meet Isaiah Lee, Dave Chappelle Attack Suspect
On 3 May 2022, comedian Dave Chappelle was attacked by suspect Isaiah Lee while on stage performing in Hollywood. The appearance was a part of the Netflix Is a Joke Fest, a live comedy festival that initiated on 28 April and continues through 8 May. Dave was performing at the Hollywood Bowl in Hollywood, California at the time of the incident.
According to the video, the man, now identified as Isaiah Lee, jumped on stage and tackled him to the floor. He was armed with a fake gun (a replica of a semi-automatic) and a knife attached to it which would eject when discharged correctly.
Lee was detained by the security after police arrested and took him in custody shortly after. Los Angeles County Jail records show that he was arrested by the LAPD’s Hollywood Division at 11:50 P.M. local time and booked on 4 May 2022 at 3:36 A.M.
He has been held on a $30,000 bond after the incident, according to the report of TMZ.
Journalist Sharon Carpenter tweeted, that he was finishing up his performance when a man ran on stage and lunged at him, and knocked him to the floor.
Isaiah has been charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon, NBC Los Angeles reported. The motive for the attack has not been made public. Heavy reported it is unclear if he has an attorney or spokesperson who would comment on his behalf.
According to the 32-second version video shared on Twitter by the username DoZay, Dave carried on the show after the incident. Another video showed comedian Chris Rock joining Chappelle on stage after the incident. Video also showed Chappelle joking about how he “stomped a n—a backstage” after the attack.
After, the incident Isaiah was injured and shared that he was loaded into an ambulance, as tweeted by a Twitter user. According to NBC Los Angeles, the LAPD said the suspect suffered “superficial injuries”.
An eyewitness told TMZ that the attacker got up and started running when a swarm of people went after him. He was running around the screen on the stage when, as the eyewitness put it, “the mob caught yo with him and beat the crap out of him, stomping on him”. The eyewitness also revealed Jamie Foxx and Busts Rhymes got a few licks in.
According to the photo posted on socials, his arm was backward, his eye was swollen shut, bloody nose, a swollen forehead, and a dislocated shoulder.
