Jacob Hutchins On Deadliest Catch
Jacob Hutchins was one of the new deckhands abroad the Wizard featured on Deadliest Catch season 19. He dreamt of becoming the first person of color to captain a crab boat in the Bering Sea, and for this, he worked harder and wasn’t afraid to speak his mind.
“I know that this industry is changing, and I’m not exactly sure about what’s going to happen but while the getting is good, I’m gonna try to be a captain,” Jacob shared.
However, things weren’t looking so good for the aspirer as he had already received two strikes from Captain Keith Colburn. In the show, Jacob — who was recently demoted after a screw-up involving a crab pot — said he was liking making the bait. To which, Keith replied that that’s a good thing, since “he’s going to be here a while,” before Jacob retorts, “Well, that’s fine, because it’s far away from you. That’s what I like.”
Obviously, Keith loses his temper. “Hey! Again already you start the day like this,” he exploded at the deckhand. “Nah, you’re not in the bait anymore. You’re in your room. Go. You’re done.”
Later, Jacob then confronts the captain, “I don’t know what it is about me that rubs you the wrong way, but you gotta just get over that, man.” Keith in turn asks one of his deckhands deckhand Robby, “I mean, this guy right here, Robby? Robby’s one of the only deckhands I’ve ever had that got fired on this boat that has come back and worked on it, okay? But what did I can you for, Robby?”
“Saying some s-,” Robby answered. “I disrespected the captain, which you don’t do.”
Acknowledging that he made a mistake, Jacob then says, “I’m not trying to piss you off. I’m sorry for disrespecting you, Monte. And I’m sorry for disrespecting you too, Keith. I’ll listen to what you guys have to say. Can I help these guys out, please?”
The captain who’s been waiting to hear the same words, gives Jacob another chance before advising him to go out there and “bust ass” to prove his mettle.
How Much Is Jacob Hutchins Net Worth?
Jacob Hutchins garnered a net worth of under $300 thousand by 2023. Reportedly, on Deadliest Catch, he made around anywhere from $15,000 to $50,000 per season.
This dreamer stepped on his first cran boat on January 10, 2011. “I didn’t have a father to give me a career, to give me a boat,” he recalled. “The people I was working around knew they were going to be fishermen from the second they could think for themselves. They already had their lives set up in front of them.”
Being a newcomer and on top of that, a person of color, the job wasn’t easy for him. “There’s a lot of racism in Westport and a lot of very ignorant people I was able to navigate. That’s just part of being African American,” he explained.
However, a few months later, he ended up on a boat with “very good people who were able to see past how different I was” and things got easier. Fast forward to September 2017, Jacob joined F/V Saga. Six months later, he then joined F/V ERLA – N and worked there for a year before finally boarding F/V Early Dawn in Jan 2019.
In September 2022, while he was working at F/V Early Dawn, Jacob then received an offer to board F/V Wizard. Thus, he hopped on the ship and went on to become a reality star.
Besides crabbing, Jacob also enjoys singing. His love for music comes from his childhood singing hymns/classical music and playing the trumpet at Sylvan Way Baptist Church and High School in Bremerton. No wonder, he’s often found writing poetry and songs while working on the Bering Sea.
In 2020, he even started a band called The Jacob Hutchins Band — transitioning from singing classically to jazz. Find them on Youtube @jacobhutchinsband
