Jamaal Barber On MTV’s The Exhibit
MTV recently premiered MTV’s The Exhibit: Finding the Next Great Artist on 3rd March 2023. The brand-new reality competition program pits seven American artists against one another for a chance to display their work at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden and win a $100,000 cash prize.
Jamaal Barber is one of the contestants in the show. The vivid prints of African individuals by Jamaal illustrate the diversity of Black cultural manifestations. According to Jamaal, these motifs—like hair texture and textile patterns—are cultural symbols that shape how the general public perceives Blackness.
“I’m excited to be a part of this show with a great group of amazing artists,” Jamaal said. “To have the possibility of being associated with an institution like the Hirshhorn is worth it alone. I’m always looking to push myself to the next level and this is definitely about moving to the next level.”
The contestant joining the show are Jennifer Warren, Frank Buffalo Hyde, Clare Kambhu, Misha Kahn, Jillian Mayer, and Baseera Khan.
Weekly tasks will be motivated by Hirshhorn’s collection thanks to this collaboration. Together with Dometi Pongo of MTV News, Melissa Chiu, the director of the Hirshhorn, will co-host the program.
“Our partnership with MTV and Smithsonian Channel connects the Hirshhorn’s collection and art-for-everyone ethos with a national audience wherever they are, at home or on screens,” Melissa said. “The docuseries invites viewers to witness how artists transform ideas into concrete and original responses.”
Melissa also hopes that the show will highlight the importance of artmaking to a wider audience: “Over six episodes, this series presents seven rising artists from all over the country, documenting their creative process in real-time. It emphasizes the significance of an artist’s role within society.”

Jamaal Barber Career
Jamaal Barber has been working at JBarberStudio since 2005. He previously worked as a graphic designer at APCO Graphics from 2005 to 2014. He was always drawn to beautiful pictures and detailed artwork in picture books and comics. On the back of his elementary school textbooks and other available materials, he soon began to create his own images. After reading about Romare Bearden’s legacy and life in high school, he ultimately heeded the urge to pursue a career in the arts.
In 2013, Jamaal began experimenting with printmaking and decided to make it his main emphasis after witnessing a screen printing demonstration at a nearby art gallery. His mixed-media prints and woodcuts are on display at ZuCot Gallery. The Decatur Arts Festival, the Atlanta Print Biennial Exhibition, and other local art exhibitions have also featured them. The New York Times, Penguin Random House, Black Art in America, Twitter, and Emory University are just a few of the organizations for which Jamaal has worked.
