After her “emotionally abusive” marriage to the late Playboy founder Hugh Hefner, Crystal Hefner has found love once again with marine biologist James Ward. The couple’s romance went public in September 2024 although they started dating in April 2024 after mutual friends set them up. James and the model started posting pictures of themselves together on social media in July, and ever since then, they have been posting updates on their romantic and exciting travels all over the world.
“I am deeply moved by the overwhelming love and support we’ve received,” Crystal told Page Six on Sept. 19. “It truly means the world to me knowing how much people care.” Then she added, “When I published my book [“Only Say Good Things“] earlier this year, it was a significant part of my healing journey, and I’m incredibly grateful to be in such a positive place now.”
Even though Crystal was enthused about her new partner in multiple interviews, she refrained from disclosing too much about his private life.
With Crystal, James has taken several romantic vacations across the globe, chronicling their adventures along the way. He went on vacation with the model in September 2024 to the stunning Cook Islands, a country in the South Pacific.
“Safe to say that our first few days in the Cook Islands have been a bit of a whirlwind,” James wrote captioned the post. “High winds and torrential rains dissipating but all culminating in an amazing experience. Their reputation as being some of the kindest people on earth isn’t misplaced and I’m so looking forward to our next few days here.”
In June 2024, James had previously visited a few small Mexican settlements with Crystal.

The diver described the past few months as “nothing short of spectacular,” sharing a video from their numerous travels throughout the globe. “I’ve spent years working on patience and gratitude, learning from everyone in my life, and seeing so many of the dreams come to fruition that I’ve held as long as I can remember. Thanks for being a part of this journey with me,” he captioned the video.
Crystal gave an illuminating interview about their relationship. “I’ve never felt like I’ve had someone that truly protects me. And in this relationship, I feel like I have a protector,” she told Us Weekly.
Before Crystal, James was married to his ex-wife Alicia Ward, co-founder of SeeThroughSea.
Talking about who they met and their professional collaboration, Alicia told UPROXX that she came across Islands Magazine after pursuing a career as a full-time underwater photographer. In one issue, she read about a photographer and a marine biologist in Grand Cayman. She reached out to him via Facebook and as she was typing “You don’t know me, but here’s why I added you,” Jim accepted her friend request.
But, they didn’t speak to each other for six months or so. One day she posted a photo of herself after knocking out her two front teeth with the caption, “If you see me not smiling lately, it’s because I have no teeth. I promise I’m getting it fixed.”
After that, Jim reached out to her writing, “I don’t really know why we’re friends, you toothless person, but I really am glad that this connection was made however it was made, because I’ve always wanted to come up to Hawaii, and I appreciate your dolphin photos. I’m just saying that you’ve got someone who supports your work.”
The couple then got to talking and he had ticked booked from “Grand Cayman to Hawaii to come meet me, and it just fell into place after that.” And the rest was history.
Alicia is also a professional underwater photographer who promotes respectful and responsible ocean etiquette and inspires the conservation of marine life. You can find Alicia on Instagram where she has 121K followers.
