Jon Batiste Family
Jon Batiste family is a renowned Louisiana-based family of musicians. His grandparents were John Jeffery “Jeffey” Jean-Batiste and Estella Mae Batiste (nee Curtis). His grandfather was born in 1913 with Cajun French roots and is from New Iberia. Meanwhile, his wife Estella was born on 9 June 1915 and raised in Georgia however her ancestry is not known.
Jon’s grandfather was the son of Eraste “Earnest” Jean–Batiste and Eve Elizabeth Jean-Batiste. Whereas, his grandmother was the daughter of Garnett Curtis and Ella Ann Curtis.
His grandparents were the first African-American businessperson in the Ninth Ward owning a grocery store and a hardware store. When his uncle David was 17, his grandfather bought the boys a piano, but his grandmother Estella was the musical driving force in the family. She taught music to her children and was responsible for the creation of the Batiste Brothers Band. But before that, David’s band was called David and Gladiators.
Later “the Gladiators” became the Batiste brothers.
John and Estella met each other in New York City and settled in New Orleans. Together they had seven children—John, David Sr., Paul, Michael, Peter Sr., James, and Thomas.
Just as Neb Sublette points out in his book, The World That Made New Orleans, “slaves in the United States have lost their ancestral vocabulary, and were raised from birth to have no past and no future, as members of an eternally subjugated caste whose great-grandchildren would be born into slavery.”
Jon lost his grandfather John on 27 June 2012 at the age of 99 whereas he lost his grandmother Estella on 6 September 2007 at the age of 92.
Jon has over 30 cousins in his family that can play music.
Fun Fact: In recent years, the Batiste family learned they were related to other New Orleans legendary artists who shared the name Batiste, even though some of their names were spelled differently. According to his uncle Damon, his family is related to, Alvin Batiste – a musical educator and clarinetist; Harold Battiste – a record label founder, composer, and saxophonist, as well as the band director for Sonny and Cher; and Milton Batiste who played the trumpet “always with a smile.”

It just makes it all the clearer to me that I want to commit to this and for us to be together.’ But once we realized we had this tiny window before the bone marrow transplant, we decided to go for it.”
