Meet Justina Miles, Rihanna’s ASL Performer
After the Super Bowl LVII halftime, the internet was appropriately losing its mind over Justina Miles — who was signing for deaf viewers at home as she enthusiastically danced along to Rihanna’s setlist.
“Hands down everyone-else-put-your-hands-down one of the best live signed musical performance translations I’ve seen. The musicality, the killer articulation, the choices, the layered representation, the preparation, the authenticity! No cap all slap,” a viewer said.
The Super Bowl was definitely a dream come true for Justina. But she wasn’t just happy that she got the chance to share the experience with the whole world. The star was also proud to really bring that empowerment to millions and millions of Black deaf people all over the country who’ve never really seen that before. “I feel that is truly lifting every voice, even my voice,” she added.
Her performance also made history as she was the first female deaf ASL interpreter to ever grace the Super Bowl’s halftime show.
Joining her as sign language interpreters for the 52nd Super Bowl were also Troy Kotsur and Colin Denny.
Justina Miles Career
Justina Miles received her first-ever salary as a fast-food employee in the summer of 2020. She was a CarHopper and brought home at least $40-$60 of tips every day. Unfortunately, since the workplace was poorly managed, unsanitary, and unprofessional, she quit her job and started working in an Asian restaurant. It was only there she learned what it meant to be a family of employees and have a caring owner.
In 2021, she then joined Walmart as a cashier. She liked the pay there and her co-workers were friendly. However, she didn’t like rude customers and would quit her job soon.
Meanwhile, Justina was working to make a living, the star was also garnering more and more fans on TikTok. Infact, her version of TikTok #crushonyouchallenge had gone viral on Twitter in 2020 where she interpreted the song by rapper Lil’ Kim.
In addition to that, Justina also made news as a part of the USA team that went to the 2021-2022 Deaflympics in Brazil, where she won a silver medal as part of the 4×100 women’s track relay team. She was also the valedictorian at the Model Secondary School for the Deaf in Washington, DC.
Talking about her journey in MSSD, she was a 4.0 average student since her freshman year. She had many successes there such as the National Honors Society, Honor Roll, and awards such as Most Committed, Rookie of the Year, Unsung Hero Award, and more athletic awards and achievements.
In the future, she’d like to graduate from my HBCU, Bowie State University as a registered nurse. She aims to have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree as she loves helping others, “I am a people person, I’m great at science, I’m committed, and I love to travel. I am perfect for this job. A travel nurse makes an impressionable salary and I know I will enjoy the job as I can travel across,” Justina explained.

Coming from a single-mother household, it’s no surprise Justina credits her mother for everything she’s able to become today. “I am persistent because I watched her take me to school with her until she graduated. Committed because she commits to taking care of three kids by herself. I am determined because she didn’t have room for excuses. I will succeed because of her best efforts,” she explained.
Before her Super Bowl performance, her mother also gave her the best advice — “Just be your Philly Black Deaf self, everything would be amazing.”
