Netflix’s Worst Ex Ever: Where Is Kevin Lewis Today?
Episode 4 of Worst Ex Ever, a new Netflix spin-off series of Worst Roommate Ever, told the stories of Kevin Lewis. Amanda Canales met her ex-husband Kevin in 2007 at Denny’s in Everett, Washington. “He was there with his friend in the booth behind me. And I was there with my friend, Ari, ” Amanda shares in the episode.
Ari, Amanda’s friend also appeared on the show and shared, “The story with Kevin and Amanda, you would think was picture-perfect. We were sitting in a booth eating nachos, and Kevin came and sat right in our booth next to Amanda.”
A friend of Kevin’s also appeared on the show and shared that his friend was never shy with women. Kevin asked for Amanda’s phone number but she ignored him. A week later, she ran into him in Spokane and Kevin joked that “it was meant to be” and his charming demeanor enticed Amanda as well. Kevin told her that he wanted a relationship with her and she found his efforts attractive.
Amanda’s siblings also met Kevin and they liked him considering his little flaws as a grain of salt.
When Amanda and Kevin’s relationship got serious he asked Amanda’s father for her hand. After a short wedding, they got married in July 2009 where they had a big wedding with 200 guests. At the age of 25, Amanda became pregnant with their daughter Eliana. Within three months of Eliana’s birth, Amanda became pregnant again. She and Kevin shared two girls and a boy.
But, Kevin’s demeanor started to change and he lacked affection. He would put Amanda down and call her a lot of names. Amanda added, “When I was pregnant with my son, he called me a crybaby and fat b¡tch. I was just really like, “Who did I marry? Who is this person?”
Throughout the marriage, Kevin was allegedly abusive. Divorce was not an option, and she tried to make it work. Along with emotional abuse, Kevin would turn very controlling. This also affected Amanda’s relationship with her family members.
When Amanda went to Kevin to talk about wanting a divorce he was “super upset” and “seemed hurt.” At one point he also assaulted her by punching her face. Although the family advised her to report the assault, thinking about her children, Amanda chose to avoid it. Although he apologized many times, the assault happened again.
2017 saw the end of their romance. Amanda moved into an Everett apartment complex with her three children, leaving the house she shared with Lewis. Canales related horrifying tales from her relationship with Lewis during the trial. According to Law & Crime, she stated that her ex-husband had previously threatened to kill her if she did not give him custody of their children.
Kevin received a life sentence after being found guilty. Amanda made a statement during the sentencing, criticizing her ex for trying to traumatize their kids.
During the murder trial, shocking information regarding the hired killers was revealed. Amanda’s ex-husband gave Jerradon Phelps and Alexis Hale $2,400 to kill her. Phelps and Hale were flaunting their prizes on the internet in the days after the bungled murder that claimed Amanda’s sister Alisha’s life.
“The male suspect posted photos on social media showing off several hundred dollar bills just a few hours after the murder,” the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. “The female suspect allegedly bragged to several acquaintances that she’d been hired to kill someone in Snohomish County.”
Amanda issued a statement after the arrest. “I was with [Lewis] for almost 10 years and hid from everyone how awful the marriage was. They didn’t know the real Kevin. Even I didn’t know how far he would go until it happened,” she said.
After a six-week trial, in November 2021, the jury returned a guilty judgment, finding Kevin Lewis guilty of first-degree murder. Amanda called him “pure evil” and voiced amazement at his interactions with their children, who were in the house when she was intended to be slain, at the sentencing hearing in January 2022. Kevin received a life sentence without the possibility of release.
