Intentional or unintentional, stealing is a crime. Kevin Rieck understands this and is apologetic with his partner Sam Brinton — one of the federal government’s first gender non-binary officials — who was charged with felony theft of a moveable property without consent.

Meet Kevin Rieck, Sam Brinton Partner
Kevin Rieck married the love of his life, Sam Brinton on January 18, 2019. It was the best day of Kevin’s life when he wore blue while his partner rocked a red coat.
After the wedding, the duo went on several trips — with their last one that year being to Berlin, Germany. “Had a truly epic weekend with my husband in Berlin. Gorgeous time with a gorgeous man,” Sam showcased an IG pic of them under the Brandenburg Gate.
Also, continuing their adventure, the two were spotted out on a date night touring the Washington D.C. Temple in May 2022.
On their 3rd wedding anniversary, Sam took to their IG to write, “It’s a cute game for us but the words mean a lot. Throughout one of the hardest years of our lives, we kept the candle burning (and brighter than ever I might add). I truly think it may be forever. And I’ll keep loving him the most (or as close to most as possible). Happy Anniversary to the man of my dreams, Kevin Rieck.”
Likewise, the next month, Kevin reciprocated his love on FB saying that he was “unapologetically in love with [his] husband.” So, nothing people to him going to change that. “No combination of vile words spewed from your gob or clumsily smashed on a keyboard is going to hurt me or make me think less of myself or Sam. Find another outlet for your uninformed, mindless hate,” he added.
And he remained true to his words when Sam was accused of stealing a traveler’s luggage from the Minneapolis airport in September 2022.
In case you missed the drama, Sam was charged with felony theft after allegedly stealing a Vera Bradley suitcase reportedly worth $2,325 from baggage claim at the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport. As seen on the surveillance camera, Sam grabbed the luggage, removed its ID tag identifying the owner, and was later seen using the suitcase on at least two occasions.
In their defense, Sam said that they took the suitcase by mistake due to exhaustion. And when they realized it, they got nervous, emptied the luggage, and left the person’s clothes inside the drawers of a dresser in the hotel room.
Sam indeed was in turmoil. But with Kevin by their side, they felt they could pass any storm. “On a really hard week, I am grateful for a man who loves me as I am. Thank you to Kevin for the smile and the hugs,” they once wrote.

Kevin Rieck worked as a Copy and Print Supervisor at Staples, a Massachusetts-based online marketplace that allowed individuals to buy office products such as printers, computer peripherals, and furniture.

As for his education, Kevin is a University of South Florida 2013 graduate.
On the other hand, Sam holds dual graduate degrees in nuclear science and engineering as well as the Technology Policy Program from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Kansas State University. They are a well-known advocate for LGBTQ youth who also served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Office of Spent Fuel and Waste Disposition. There, they oversaw its programs including the Office of Spent Fuel and Waste Science and Technology and the Office of Integrated Waste Management.
Sadly, Sam was placed on leave from the Office of Spent Fuel and Waste Disposition after his luggage scandal in 2022.
Previously, Sam also served as the first employee of the country’s first and only nuclear waste management and disposal start-up company, the Bipartisan Policy Center.

Kevin Rieck comes from a family of six. His parents Beverly S (born: January 16, 1965) and Wayne Rieck (born: June 24, 1949), himself, and his siblings.
As for his siblings, they are, Allie Rieck, Matt Rieck, and Lauren Rieck.
Interestingly, at Kevin’s wedding, Sam was asked to escort their mother down the aisle. “Since I hadn’t gotten to see my mother at my wedding, it felt like I was truly without question part of his family,” Sam recalled.
