Meet Laura Tyler, Face Off S5 Winner
Laura Tyler is SyFy’s Face Off royalty. She made her debut in the show in season 3 and ended up becoming a runner-up but lost to Nicole Chilelli. She later appeared as a contestant and won the season 5 of the show.
Laura, the season 8 winner and third-runner-up, made a return appearance in 2015 to assist in coaching a fresh group of competitors. Emily Serpico (18) and Darla Edin (28), two of her teammates, advanced to the championship round, where Darla ultimately emerged victorious. Darla’s victory in the grand finale also made Laura, her coach, the first-ever two-time champion of the show.
Of all the creations of Laura on Face Off, the one that she likes the most is the Star Wars-inspired character from season three.
“Not just because I love “Star Wars,” but because I think it was a great example of my style of work. It was the first piece I did and I was working with Sarah and about halfway through I started to look around at what other people were doing and what they were sculpting, and I was afraid we would lose right off the bat,” Laura added. “As the hours went by and I started to see them applying paint to their work, I saw them shaping up different than what I envisioned they were going to look like. I learned a lesson that day and that is what a difference paint can make. Once our paint was finished I saw the complete work and realized we were on to something and were worthy of being there. I have had others that I am very proud of, but that one stands out to me because it was my first.”

Laura Tyler Career
Laura Tyler’s passion for makeup and design started because she wanted to do theatre. She attended Dr. Phillips High School, which is a visual and performing arts magnet school. She had to choose between theater and art and eventually chose fine art was going to be best for her.
But she did volunteer with theater so she was around it. She told Florida Today, “They didn’t really have me do any acting, but wanted me to do a lot of tech work. I started doing theater makeup and the first play I did makeup for was “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” By my second year, I was pretty much heading up the makeup department, and I would get together with other students and try airbrushing and experimenting. I was 16 years old at the time and I was experimenting with makeup and doing fine art. Doing makeup is an art form and uses a lot of the same principles as fine art.”
She works as a freelance makeup artist in films and TV shows. But, she also runs a company named Creature Works.
