Meet Matt Copson, Caroline Polachek Boyfriend
Matt Copson and Caroline Polachek started seeing each other in 2017. Two years later, the duo then also connected professionally, with Matt providing visuals for Caroline’s debut album and effectively blending his own eclectic art style with his boo’s unique music to create some truly stunning videos, photos, and more.
However, though the lovebirds were already years into their relationship, they only revealed the secret in 2021 during an interview with The New Yorker. Still, at the time of penning this article, that interview was the only time that Caroline’s relationship with Matt was officially mentioned — both in reporting and on social media.
Prior to Matt, Caroline was married to Ian Drennan from 2015 to 2017. After the divorce, she said to The New Yorker, “My mother very much disapproved, and my friend group was sort of split by it.” But on a positive note, the emotional time drove her deeper into her music. “I was feverishly compelled by the music, and in love with it,” she said. Guess, the loss of her marriage and the roots of her new love with Matt pushed her to create some of the most emotional music of her solo career to date.
Now, the alternative pop music artist has had some pretty big accomplishments under her belt including touring with Dua Lipa, ghostwriting for Elon Musk, and collaborating with Charli XCX. The last we checked, her new release “Desire, I Want to Turn Into You” was trending in the charts.
For those who don’t know, Caroline first stepped into the spotlight as the lead vocalist for the Brooklyn-born electronic band Chairlift. In 2013, she then began her solo career under the moniker Ramona Lisa and released her debut album Arcadia the following year.

Sadly, Caroline’s father passed away in April 2020 due to coronavirus. Unlike Matt, Caroline said that her father wasn’t a great parent. He struggled with depression and bipolar disorder his whole life, which taught Caroline and her sister “disappointment and self-sufficiency” at too young an age. However, her dad was a brilliant thinker and academic, a renowned China scholar, a lightning wit, and a talented musician who hated pop music and never once came to see her perform.

“The entire thing is an epilogue. Everyone’s last days are f**king crazy. Because the most silly things take on the most significance. Particularly when someone’s killing themselves because you know what you’re doing,” Matt explained. Also, he remarked that after Last Days, there are only landscapes and no humans. “In the opera, you’ll see I’ve designed a 17-meter backdrop, which is a huge landscape that’s constantly shifting and moving.”
But though Matt has now stepped into opera, he’s not fond of the category. Infact, he only likes the works of Harrison Birtwistle among all opera artists.
Besides art, Matt has also dabbled in the music industry. He released his single “Last Days” in 2022.
