BBC’s Waterloo Road, which first aired from 2006 to 2015, centered on the pupils and teachers of a comprehensive school in Greater Manchester. To the joy of devoted viewers, the show made a sensational reappearance in January 2023. A new generation of characters, notably Khalil “Kai” Sharif, has joined the roster of returning actors. As previously reported, Ali portrays the LGBT, Muslim, basketball-playing high school student Kai in the BBC’s Waterloo Road revival. In an interview with PinkNews about the show, Ali referred to the current generation of kids as “reflections of society” and said that he intended for his character to “subvert misconceptions.”
“Whenever I did play queer characters, they had to deal with a lot. They had to be very resilient in the face of adversity,” Ali explained. “At Waterloo Road the adversity doesn’t look like homophobia or targeted abuse, there isn’t the queer tragedy story cliche at all.”
While admitting that he “wanted to make sure” the BBC revival didn’t “slip into any of those cliches,” Ali also disclosed that he was heavily involved in the show’s representation of a “queer Arab Muslim.” He added: “No one’s better to do that than me because it is a lived experience.”

The new Italian-Iraqi film “EUROPA,” which was directed by Haider Rashid and stars Adam as the protagonist character, “Kamal,” was released internationally this year.
Adam won Best Actor at the first Red Sea International Film Festival for his performance in Europa, which won the renowned first prize at Cairo Film Connection. In 2021, Adam won Best UK Actor at KinoFilm British Shorts Festival Manchester for his role in Baba. The irony is I’m an actor so that’s something I should probably practice.”
