Meet Johnny Brown, Ketanji Brown Jackson Dad
Johnny Brown would be awake hours before the first rays of the early-morning light pierced the sky, helping his 4-year-old daughter, Ketanji, get ready for school in his University of Miami on-campus apartment.
He’d drive the 40 minutes to Miami’s Brownsville district, drop her off at kindergarten, and then return to the University of Miami’s Coral Gables campus for the start of law school lectures.
Speaking with the University of Miami, Johnny shared, “I did that every day because I knew it would help make a difference in Ketanji’s life. But we never deliberately set out and said we wanted to instill in her certain life lessons. We led by example. We always tried to put her in the best educational environments that we could find, and then let her make the necessary adjustments and decisions from that.”
Ketanji Brown is close to making history as the first Black Woman on the Supreme Court. She has all the necessary qualifications to take on that role. To make her eligible for all of this, she has always credited her parents, her father in particular, who himself is a lawyer.
So, Ketanji Brown being selected for the Supreme Court is not only her dream and her dream alone. The path laid out by her dad while creating an educational environment in his home was the foundation, which Ketanji built everything during her career. She once said, “It was my father who started me on this path as a child. My father made the fateful decision to transition from his job as a high school history teacher and go to law school”.
“I watched him study and he became my first professional role model,” Ketanji said.
Johnny Brown spoke about him raising Ketanji and revealed, “She is exactly right. We sat at the dining room table. Me studying and her doing her thing with her coloring books and playing around”.
