What Happened To Michael Matthews, MIC Star Spencer Matthews Brother?
In the new Disney+ show Finding Michael, Made In Chelsea‘s Spencer Matthews is out looking for his brother Michael Matthews on Mount Everest. Michael was the youngest man from Britain to climb Mount Everest as he reached the summit on 13 May 1999. But the accomplishment became his last, as he disappeared into a snowstorm and disappeared forever three hours later, becoming the 162nd climber to die on the peak.
It has been 23 years since Michael climbed the summit. The tragic loss devastated an otherwise perfect family.
So the show is all about launching a search party to find his brother’s remains based on the last known location. He is taking the help of expert Nepalese mountaineer Nirmal Purja MBE, who is famed for climbing 14 eight-thousanders (peaks above 8,000 meters) in a record time of six months and six days. Nirmal was also in the British army and the Royal Navy.
Spencer also has his family involved in this project to retrace his final moments for the first time as part of a TV documentary, backed by his brother James and their wives Vogue Williams and Pippa Middleton.
“During recent years the question of whether or not Mike could be found and brought home to our family was on my mind. I became uncomfortable with the thought of him being left up there, possibly in plain sight,” Spencer while promoting the show. “So, 23 years after his death and with my family’s support … I traveled to Nepal and trekked to Mount Everest to find my brother and bring him home.”
He concluded the post, “This has been the most meaningful and humbling experience of my own life and it is hoped the film will deliver my brave brother the decent legacy that he earned when so young.”

According to a source of The Sun, they told, “Though the Matthews family were never able to recover Michael’s body, there is a guide who believes they know his final resting place.”

Michael is thought to have become disoriented in thick snow while descending in a guided group in the notorious Death Zone of Everest, at a height of over 26,000 feet (7,900 meters). After spending 20 minutes on the summit he began descending on fixed ropes. But he was engulfed by a ferocious snowstorm whipped up by 100mph winds.
Michael separated from his senior guide. There was no sign of Michael so the guide continued to base camp alone. Spencer, who was just 10 at the time, writes: “James took the news badly. With just a year and a half between them, he and Mike were the closest of friends. The loss was heartbreaking for James.”
Michael, a stock market trader, had ascended some of the world’s most difficult mountains. He had climbed Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, East Africa, and summits in the Pyrenees and Swiss Alps in Europe.
Sadly, climbing Mount Everest proved disastrous for him.
Michael had difficulty with the last few sections of the climb. He was able to spend 20 minutes with his crew admiring the view from the summit. They started their descent.
It has not been spoiled whether he was able to get his brother back or not. We’ll have to see the show if Spencer successfully completed his mission to retrieve his brother’s body.
