In the interview, Robin also shared a piece of advice ahead of the grand footballing event for her son. She said, “My advice is definitely from a mom’s perspective. Enjoy the ride. Get out and have fun with your teammates … and focus on the plan and be confident.”
Furthermore, Joe’s mom is also proud of her son for talking about the poverty in Southeast Ohio in his Heisman Trophy Speech. The Columbus Dispatch reported that the night Joe Burrow gave his Heisman Trophy speech, she met a middle-aged Black man who stopped her on the way to the bathroom at a dinner gala in NYC.
Robin recalled, “He told me, ‘I just wanted to tell you, the thing I’m so proud of about Joe’s speech is that as a white athlete he stood up there and talked about the poverty where he’s from in his white culture. People will respond differently because, finally, a white athlete is talking about poverty.'”
In association with Karin Bright, the president of the Athens County Food Pantry, the Athens County Food Pantry was strategically re-named as Joe Burrow Hunger Relief Fund. As of December 2019, the online fundraiser had already collected more than $460,000 to combat food insecurity for children in Southeast Ohio.
“I think we have the responsibility as a family to help capitalize on his platform, notoriety and help where we can. And that’s one way we can do it very easily, but otherwise, it’s still been pretty organic, ” Robin said when she was asked if there was any organization to combat food insecurity and grow the Joe Hunger Relief Fund.
Gallipolis Daily Tribune reported on December 21, 2019, that the team of Joe Hunger Relief Fund was working closely with the local agencies to make the best use of the funds. Joe’s mom Robin shared, “The Athens County Food Pantry has been working tirelessly to manage the outpouring of support and donations. Our family would like to thank everyone who has donated.”
