People are talking about Joey Lawrence’s supposed relationship with Melina Alves (co-star turned mistress) during his divorce from Samantha Cope. The former Blossom star was embroiled in a series of allegations that caused him to make unfavorable news.
A person who talked with PEOPLE claimed that Joey had love-bombed co-star Melina Alves in a way that was so overwhelming that it felt like a part of a bigger, more devious scheme. Joey and Melina never publicly addressed any of these accusations.
PEOPLE also revealed that their source confirmed that infidelity was a factor for Joey and his soon-to-be ex-wife Samantha’s impending divorce. The source close the couple also confirmed that the pair went their separate ways after Joey struck up a relationship with Melina.
“Joey met Melina Alves on the set of their movie, where she was a producer,” the source claimed. “He then love-bombed her just like he love-bombed Samantha. He continued to date Melina even after Samantha found out about it and confronted him.”
When Samantha “wanted to go to counseling,” Joey “fooled their counselor” and would “get ready for dates with Melina while Sam watched, bawling her eyes out.”
TMZ also obtained divorce files and the documents stated that Melina’s former husband Edward Rider allegedly learned that his ex-wife was having an affair with Joey in late March. According to TMZ, Edward filed for divorce in July, a mere few weeks before to Samantha’s filing. Edward alleged in the court filing that his wife and her co-star Joey were having the affair in California — where they were presumably located for the filming of Socked In For Christmas — and went on to engage in infidelity “at various other times and places,” according to TMZ.
Joey and Samantha met while filming Lifetime’s My Husband’s Secret Brother in 2021 before tying the knot in May 2022. Cope filed for divorce on August 13, two months after their June 7, 2024, date of separation, citing irreconcilable differences as the basis for their split, according to the divorce papers that PEOPLE was able to access. She asked the court to prevent either party from receiving spousal support and to take complete physical custody of their 19-month-old daughter Dylan, allowing Lawrence to visit at her discretion.
As soon as Joey was seen in PEOPLE’s exclusive images from his family vacation to Jamaica in August, without a wedding band, rumors about the former couple’s breakup began to circulate. Samantha was conspicuously missing from the photos as well.
Samantha posted a statement regarding their breakup on August 24. It included a video montage that included shots of her sobbing and her 1-year-old daughter Dylan.
“An amazing friend of mine recently told me, ‘Don’t be afraid of the tears. Let them flow. Because every tear is God gently squeezing the pain and devastation from your heart to make room for new beautiful feelings to come in,'” Samantha began. “She also reminded me: ‘The more you cry, the less you pee,’” Samantha joked, before concluding, “So let them flow. You got this.”
