Shanika Malcolm has always been connected to nature. Permaculture, natural birthing, hiking, and more, she was into nature skills even before those things were popular. So, being asked to be on Naked & Afraid: Solo was like a dream come true for her.

Shanika Malcolm On Discover’s Naked & Afraid: Solo
Shanika Malcolm is the Afro-indigenous woman to ever complete on Naked & Afraid franchise. She grew up in Philadelphia where nature was always her refuge. “I’d always find like the state parks, places to go hiking, or to get in a river, like all the time, like even in the USA traveling. I love road-tripping. So, when I’m driving, I always look up nature sites and get one with nature,” she explained.
Thus, after years of exploring nature, in 2017, she found out that there were “earth skills gatherings” happening the South/North Carolina. Naturally, she decided to participate in one of them for a weeklong event called “Firefly.” There, she had the most wonderful experience of her life and it was kind of her initiation into the earth/primitive skills.
Year after year, Shanika then kept going back to the event to relax and connect with the community even more. Then, in 2020, when she was living in Atlanta, she visited a willow basket-making class taught by Luke Mclaughlin (the three-time competitor of Naked & Afraid) and signed up for a year.
Surprisingly, in Jan 2021, she got a Facebook message saying, “Hey, I’m a scout from Naked & Afraid. We’ve seen you online would you like to audition?” But at that point, Shanika had no thought about joining the show, and only agreed to audition because she’s the kind of person who’ll try just about anything once.
The auditioning process then began (virtually) and once she passed it, she had to do a psychic valve with a psychologist, followed by a media check-up.
Well, now that she looks back, the whole experience from the audition to wrapping up the filming, was wonderful and cumbersome at the same time. “We had a machete, a fire starter, and a mosquito net, and we had to find food and water, and basically live, that’s it! It sounds very simple, you know food, shelter, water, but it’s the hardest thing,” she explained.
Shanika Malcolm Job
Shanika Malcolm is the founder of Starseed Landing Collective Ecovillage Community. Her organization claimed to be taking action by “being the change we wish to see in the world,” instead of pushing a particular philosophy. Their vision included A Regenerative Ecovillage Intentional Community, Healing Retreat Center, Educational Hub, Cooperative Livelihood, Local & Global Transformation, Personal & Collective Spiritual expansion & growth, and Eco-hostel.
Starseed is a “place to grow together, provide for our needs, meet the highest version of ourselves, and be of greater service to the planet & each other,” Shanika said.

Prior to starting Starseed, Shanika worked at Awakening the Illuminated Heart for a while. Also, she owned and operated Eternal Wellness Institute in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with a mission to eradicate the disease by educating, empowering, and uplifting humanity through Full Spectrum Healing (nature and holistic approach).
As for her education, Shanika studied “Holistic Healing & Raw foods” at Hippocrates Health Institute, and “Raw Food Chef and Instructor” at Living Light Raw Culinary Arts Institute in 2010. Also, she attended William T. Dwyer High School and John Bartram High School.
Is Shanika Malcolm Married?
Shanika Malcolm isn’t married as of 2023. As per her FB, she’s single and ready to mingle.
Also, we don’t know if she was ever married to her baby’s father, Amaru Namaa Taga Xi-Aly, or not. But husband or not, Amaru was always hated by Shanika’s family (except for her little old bro) and the star only now realizes why.
“Now I’m seeing why, seeing what I was too blind to see before. When u meet someone their true self can only hide for soo long, til the BS comes out. I never met someone like this who claims to be a leader, toting knowledge and wisdom but is so immature, self-centered, and egotistical. I use to regret you, but am learning to transcend the negativity and have compassion,” she wrote.
Today, Shanika is a single mother to three daughters (the oldest is named Arishana). She wants to raise them naturally and also pass on her love for nature to them.
