Tailei Qi is reportedly a UNC graduate student who was going to receive his Ph.D. but ended up being the suspect in a shooting that occurred in Caudill Labs. How old is he? Does he have a wife? What is his nationality?
Here is what we know about Tailei.
Meet Tailei Qi, UNC Shooting Suspect
After a professor in his research department was shot to death, Tailei Qi, a graduate student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, was charged with first-degree murder. Following the shooting at Caudill Labs, which sparked an hours-long lockdown that required students and teachers to barricade themselves in classrooms and dorms while officials hunted for a suspect, Tailei was captured Monday afternoon.
The UNC shooting suspect was detained in Hillsborough’s Orange County Detention Center and charged with felony gun possession on school grounds. The event started when students were informed of an armed and dangerous person after 1 p.m. it happened in the second week of the autumn semester at UNC.
At 2:24 p.m., the university again issued a warning that the suspect was still evading arrest. The unidentified person’s picture was made public, and the suspect was eventually found in a residential area close to the university. Social media users posted videos of terrified students hiding in classrooms and some scaling the windows of a school building. At around 4:15 p.m., the lockdown was lifted.
The lockdown, which also affected nearby public schools, continued, according to UNC Police Chief Brian James, as authorities confirmed the suspect’s identification and looked into rumors of possible further victims. “We had to ensure that the entire campus was safe,” he said Monday.
There were no other reported injuries from the shooting. In order to notify the victim’s family, the victim, who was previously characterized as a university faculty member, was not immediately recognized. Zijie Yan, an associate professor in the Division of Applied Physical Sciences, is identified as the shooting victim on the arrest warrant.
Tailei was named as a member of Yan’s lab team on a university department website that has since been taken down.
In the Monday incident, a gun was not found right away, but investigators said they would question the suspect to find out why. “We certainly want the opportunity to interview the suspect,” James said. “To actually have the suspect in custody gives us an opportunity to figure out the why. And even the how, and also helps us to uncover a motive and … really just why this happened today.”
According to the Alamance County court, the suspect was pulled over by police two days before the shooting and given a ticket for exceeding the speed limit by about 20 mph on an interstate.
Tailei Qi Career
Graduate student Tailei Qi is enrolled in the applied physical sciences program at UNC Chapel Hill. He studies optically trapped nanoparticle arrays and a variety of exciting phenomena that are connected to them. In addition to 2D TMD photodetectors, optical tweezers (continuous wavelength laser and femtosecond laser), microspectroscopy (Raman, fluorescence, SHG, SEM, TEM, XDS, XPS, XRD), and 2G HTS superconductors, he also has experience in these fields.
Tailei is also interested in machine learning and the synthesis and self-assembly of nanoparticles. He enjoys trekking and running. He once won the 800m race and finished sixth in the 1500m.
Tailei worked as a Researcher at Suzhou Advanced Materials Research Institute. He worked there from 2015 to 2017. After that, he joined the Southern University of Science & Technology as a Research Assistant until 2019.
Furthermore, Tailei earned his BS and BAM degrees from Wuhan University. He earned an MS in Material Science from Louisiana State University.
On X, Tailei wrote, “Graduate student @UNC, engaged in light-matter interaction and related materials.” The most recent post of him on the profile reads, “How did you find your postdoc position?” He also reposted a person’s tweet about a typhoon in China.
On July 31, 2023, Tailei tweeted, “would like to make some new friends. I am a second-year Ph.D. student, interested in nanoparticle synthesis, optical trapping, self-assembly, spectra analysis, and ML. a bit stupid in daily trifles, very enthusiastic about research. Reach me if interested.”
That same day, he wrote, “What is truth?” A post in June read, “When this kind of girl shows her ‘best’ to beg others to ‘help’ me, all people then look down on me. kind of angelic b****.” It’s not clear whom he was referring to. He also wrote, “Many counter-intuitive situations in society: minimum wage do more harm to instead to protect the poor; gender quota is not to protect women but to enhance the discrimination.”
Tailei Qi Age
In 2023, Tailei Qi is 34 years old.
What Is Tailei Qi Nationality?
Because he got his education college education in China, Tailei Qi is probably Chinese by nationality.
