Thomas Nguyen, a former swimmer and retirement adviser, is the first and only Asian-American competitor on ABC’s hit dating program The Bachelorette. The show’s highly anticipated 21st season debuted on July 8 and centers on Vietnamese American student Jenn Tran, the first Asian-American female lead. The leading lady was presented to 25 men in the show’s first scene as they all competed for her attention. Ten people have already been dismissed after just two shows. A fellow Vietnamese American is making a reputation for himself as one of the top 15 competitors.
Thomas made a wonderful first impression on her during their first meeting by giving her a bracelet with his surname written on it and making a pun.
“I want to put a bracelet with my last name on it before I put a ring on it so at the end of the journey, we can turn us into a ‘Nguyen-Nguyen’ situation,” he stated.
“It’s not every day that you get to bond with somebody on your immigrant parents and you get to connect with somebody on that level because not everybody can understand that,” Tran said in an interview with Glamour about how significant her first discussion with Nguyen was to her.
Jenn added, “That was a really special conversation for me because he really understood where I was coming from and my family means everything to me.”
Most recently, Thomas’s ex (@1000plasticmeatballs) took to her TikTok to announce that her ex is “toxic.” She shared that it was surreal to watch him on TV and read people’s comment online. She added that people encouraged her to talk about their relationship.
The lady confirmed that she was not the ex Thomas talked about on a podcast. She also added that she doesn’t hate him although she chose to air a dirty laundry and said “this man is messy as hell.” Later, she complimented that she was sure that he had a good heart.
Many viewers took to the Reddit and responded to the drama. One Redditor wrote, “I really hate it when people post online and say “anyone who knows them in real life knows what I’m talking about.” Like you’re really going to post and broadcast to thousands and wink at the maybe 50 people and say “iykyk haha”???”

Thomas’s parents are named Yung Nguyen and Mylinh Nguyen. His dad Yung is 58 years old and Mylinh is 56 years old in 2024.
During their initial conversations, Nguyen and Tran bonded over their shared experiences as the children of immigrant parents. “My mum dropped out of pharmaceutical school to take on another job to sponsor her whole family over from Vietnam,” Nguyen said. “I’ve watched my parents fight for each other and I want a marriage like that.”

Thomas Nguyen had a sister named Gianna Nguyen. In July 2024, when Gianna celebrated their 25th birthday in heaven, Thomas wished his sister, “Happy birthday to my beautiful heavenly sister! Gianna would be 25 years old today and that’s so crazy to think about. Half the tattoos on my body are dedicated to her and it always makes me so happy when someone asks about it because I get to celebrate her. When you lose someone so close, you learn to love with a different level of intensity and intention.”
Sadly, Gianna passed away in 2003 on Christmas eve. Thomas has shared about his sorrow of losing her writing, “As you can imagine, Christmas gets a little weird when you bury a relative the day before Christmas but my parents are the definition of strength and resilience. I couldn’t imagine going through what they went through while still having to raise the three of us (shout out grandma Campo).”
