T’kor Clottey Job
T’kor Clottey is the founder and owner of the fashion brand T’kor Couture. Dinah Clottey (her real name), founded the hand-crocheted, social justice-focused fashion brand, in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, but her history with crocheting goes back to nearly a decade before.
“I learned to crochet when I was about 12 years old,” T’kor said in an interview. “[My mom] wanted me to learn so I could teach her. That’s the only reason I started crocheting in the first place. It was definitely something I would just get in and out of. I never took it too seriously, and, once I was able to teach my mom, I kind of just dropped it.”
But the London native began to crochet as a coping mechanism over time. Through the solitude and chaos of the COVID-19 epidemic, her pastime helped her, and ultimately, she founded T’kor Couture.
“During the pandemic, [there] was also this push for the fight for Black Lives. I just felt very stuck in my room. I’m a very shy person, so I didn’t know how to express a lot of the emotions and thoughts that were going on in my mind at the time, and crocheting was one of those ways where I felt like I could express that,” T’kor said about the beginning stages of her brand.
T’kor had intended to become a lawyer after graduating from the University of Chicago, where she was studying sociology. Whether it was through Martin Luther King Jr.’s fitted suits or the Black Panthers’ leather jackets, fashion had a significant impact on the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and 60s. This also applies to Clottey’s collection. Her designs are influenced by the 1960s, especially Soul Style.
In addition, T’kor draws inspiration for her artwork from novels and the writings of social justice activists like W.E.B. Du Bois, Ntozake Shange, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Typically, these pieces include a pattern or design that revolves around a topic. Her brand’s emblem, a crown, is derived from Basquiat’s paintings, which frequently depicted crowns on significant Black historical figures. The T’kor logo was created by Cherith, Clottey’s younger sister and an artist in her own right.
According to her LinkedIn, T’kor also worked as a Program Manager at The University of Chicago Graham School, Writer for MODA Magazine at MODA at the University of Chicago, Communications Student Coordinator at the University of Chicago, and a Student Representative for Becoming: Michelle Obama Livestream at BET (BET Networks, a subsidiary of ViacomCBS Inc.) among other jobs.
