Tyson Venegas On American Idol
Tyson Venegas wowed judges when he auditioned on American Idol where he sang the New York State Of Mind. Lionel Richie gave the 17-year-old competitor a standing ovation after he sang Billy Joel’s song. Lionel praised Tyson for his “spot-on professional” performance.
Since Tyson had previously tried out for a singing competition television series, he already had a slight advantage over the other competitors. Before competing on American Idol, he tried out for a spot on The Voice Teens in 2020, a Filipino spinoff of The Voice.
Speaking to CTV Morning Live, Tyson said: “He’s preparing to release original songs that he hopes will resonate with the audience who discovered him during the American Idol season premier on 19 February”. “I really want my music to inspire others,” he said. Looking further into the future, Port Moody’s hometown hero imagines himself performing on a globe tour or maybe at “the Grammys or Super Bowl.”
The high school student has experience competing; he has won several regional singing competitions, including one when he was only seven years old.
Tyson told CTV Morning Live he’s been immensely grateful for the outpouring of support he’s received since wowing the three judges on the show. He received a coveted Platinum Ticket from the judges, which allowed him to move on in the competition and omit a fight in one round of Hollywood Week.
Tyson, who has admired Richie his entire life, felt particularly honored to impress the iconic artist. “To perform (for him) and meet him felt like such an honor,” Venegas said. “If I had a dream duet, I think it would probably be either Lionel Richie or Bruno Mars.”
At age seven, Tyson won the B.C. Junior Talent Contest in 2013. The following year, he also became the youngest winner of the Star Showdown at the Pacific National Exhibition, a singing contest that had previously been entered and won by none other than Carly Rae Jepsen and Michael Buble. In the latter, Tyson demonstrated his early talent for jazz music by performing the iconic blues ballad Get Your Kicks On Route 66 by Nat King Cole.
