Jerry Dixon and Mario Cantone’s relationship was a story of love’s victory over society’s perception of love and the restrictions it imposes on love.
The two of them had been together for over 20 years before same-sex marriage was legalized in the state of New York. When the state apparatus was not recognizing a bond of love, Jerry and Mario were the living resistance, resisting by their very existence.
They met on 20 June 1990 and started living together a couple of years later on 01 March 1992. When New York eventually legalized same-sex marriage, in June 2011, they decided to get married eventually.
He was, of course, happy about the change and for his wedding. But in a very Mario Cantone way, was also quick to have a shot at the progress that arrive so late. He quipped “We’re older now. We’ve been together 20 years. After 20 years you’re like, ‘Thanks for the anticlimactic honeymoon, government!'”
The wedding happened on the 5th of October 2011 “on the rooftop of our home with the Empire State building shimmering in the background”. And according to Eonline, the two grooms wore “Calvin Klein tuxedos and walked down the aisle to the Rufus song In Love We Grow”. Apparently, In Love We Grow is the song of the couple.
They celebrated their 31 years together and 10 years as husbands this year. Their 10th wedding anniversary was not even a week ago.
For those who do not know, Mario Cantone, Mario was an actor in theatre, TV, and films. He had performed in several Broadway productions like those of Love! Valour! Compassion!, The Tempest, The Violet Hour, Assassins, The Producers, and Laugh Whore.
Laugh Whore went on to be nominated for the Tony Award for Best Special Theatrical Event. And Mario was nominated for Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Solo Performance.
Mario, however, was most popular for his role of Anthony Marentino for HBO’s famous TV series Sex and the City.
