He addressed the current controversy over the fact that transgender woman Lia Thomas, a 22-year-old, has joined a women’s swim team and has been shattering records. The Olympian swimmer recognized the situation to be “very complicated” he also emphasized his belief that sports need a “level playing field.”
These comments drew responses from his transgender ex-girlfriend Taylor Lianne Chandler. She shared that she feels that her ex-boyfriend’s stance on trans athlete’s participation in organized sports is both hypocritical and hurtful. Taylor, who was born intersex, told RadarOnline that his opinion was just that.
Taylor further shared that Michael is genetically superior with his 6 feet 7 inches wingspan, double-jointed ankles, and huge feet. Plus, his chemical composition allows him to breathe in fill his lungs and hold his breath longer [than his competitors]. She added that he also experiences “the chemical advantages of having ADHD [attention deficit hyperactivity disorder], which comes with added strength and endurance.”
“In that moment of watching and hearing him say those things, it felt like a literal slap in the face,” she continued. “I felt like I was good enough to love, lay with and be with, but not be respected or allowed in the women’s sport of swimming – like I was not a woman, but rather an alien or God-knows-what. It can’t be a woman’s sport if it doesn’t include all women, period!”
