Former NFL star and football coach John Curtis is the reason why Kelly Curtis pursued sports as a career. But, she had a turbulent journey hopping from one sport to the next still he supported her decision. Everyone knows Skeleton wasn’t the first choice of sports Kelly had made when she pursued athletics.

First, Kelly excelled in track and field and basketball in Princeton High School. Then she went to Tulane University but transferred to her dad’s alma mater Springfield College and her sport was Heptathlon. She moved to New York and attended St. Lawrence University.

However, her Springfield coach had advised her to take on Bobsled. “She had worked her way up to the number three two-woman bobsled team in the country and had been in a couple of competitions, and I’m thinking she might just be in the Olympics,” John said to NJ.com.

After that, Kelly revealed to her father that she was going to take drop Bobslend and take on Skeleton. “I said ‘What? That’s where you go down headfirst, right?’” Curtis recalled. “So her mother and I just gave her our best wishes and I told her to keep chasing her dream.”

John’s support of Kelly’s dream to keep finding her calling put her in the Winter Olympics 2022 representing as the first Black American athlete in Team USA Skeleton team.

John Curtis has been married to his wife Deb Smith since 4 June 1978. They met each other in 1947 at a bar named Wednesday’s on the Upper East Side. John and Deb welcomed Kelly as their youngest child. Deb had worked in the fitness community in Princeton where Kelly used to visit when she was young.

Speaking with NJ.com, John revealed, “Kelly grew up in that environment. She was doing leg presses well over 200 pounds. People would gather around and watch whatever it was she was doing. Because her mom knew Kelly was not only strong but fast, she told her ‘Runaway to the circus and you’ll make money there.’”

Kelly has two older brothers Jay Curtis and James Curtis and an older sister named Kitty Curtis Milfort.

According to John, “After seeing what Kelly is doing, she’s saying that maybe now she should have tried sports.”
