Rob Stern is a master glass artist who’s been blowing glass for over 30 years. No wonder, he called himself “the big dog” on Netflix’s fiery competition, Blown Away.
Lets to get to know him better as this Rob Stern Bio proceeds.
Rob Stern On Netflix’s Blown Away Season 3
Seeing those liquid glasses blown and bent into different shapes is a whole new level of amusement. And this is exactly what Netflix’s Blown Away is based upon. Ever since its inaugural season in 2019, Blown Away has been the niche for several audiences. And now, as season 3 hits the screen (on July 22, 2022), this fiery competition has pushed the contestants to their limits as they attempt to become “Best in Glass.”
Rob Stern, one of the 10 participants, believes in aesthetics that reside at the crossroads where humans and nature intersect. His glassworks admittedly connects the “temporary man-made to the pre-existing and eternal cosmos” — something between organic and angular. And he was more than honored to showcase it on the Netflix popular show.
“So honored to be chosen along with a group of amazing artists for this season #blownaway3 premieres July 22,” he posted on IG.
Joining Rob this season for the title of the champion and also to take home that $60,000 in prizes were his co-stars — John Moran (a sculptor and studio owner), Claire Kelly (a storyteller in glass), Maddy Hughes (here to “flex her conceptual muscles”), Dan Friday (an artist and instructor in glass), Brenna Baker (a mother of two), Minhi England (a glass memorial artist), John Sharvin (a free stylist), Grace Whiteside (a glassblower and performance artist hoping to inspire other non-binary trans people), and Trenton Quiocho (a highly competitive glass instructor).
Also, the season was hosted by actor Nick Uhas and art master Katherine Gray. Furthermore, the viewers also got a chance to see new guest judges in every episode who scrutinized the glassblowers and eliminated the least favorite.
Rob Stern Career/Work
Rob Stern was the most experience glassblower on Blown Away season 3. With over 3 decades of experience in the field, Rob has learned to capture moments with materials that “speak to a fleeting sensibility of the permanence.”
He believes that color and form dictate emotion and that humanity is transcended. So, he always attempts to mimic “the complexity of its simplicity” and his “harmonic instances” between what he “senses and does” guide him through the process.
However, Rob wasn’t away a glass fanatic. Infact, he attended Northside High School for the Performing Arts, in Atlanta. There, he was a member of an elite touring group, singing, dancing, and, acting. Later, the young enthusiast then attended San Francisco State University to study art and it was then and there he discovered glass making.
Soon falling in love with the process, Rob then apprenticed at John Lewis Glass, an industrial casting facility in Oakland, for five years. Later, he made his way to Europe, toured glass factories for a semester, and returned to refine his practice at the Pilchuck Glass School, a renowned worldwide school for its glass programs. After completing his studies, Rob again then went on to study, apprentice, and assist numerous artists/masters at Pilchuck and other schools.
In 1992, Rob then finally landed his first big job to work in the Ajeto Glass Factory in the Czech Republic. It was the start of a long-term working relationship as he would live and work there for several years.
The next year, Rob also went on to become a lecturer/studio manager at the University of Miami.
So far, Rob has participated in over 25 exhibitions all around the US and received awards including the 2017 Pilchuck scholarship and 2011 Pilchuck Auction Centerpiece designer.
