Meet Mark Mester, The Anchor Fired From KTLA
Not long before KTLA star anchor, Lynette Romero quit her job at the station, and now the news network fired her fellow anchor Mark Mester. Mark getting laid off happened days after he was suspended following an off-script segment in which he criticized the station’s handling of his co-anchor Lynette Romero’s abrupt departure, according to several employees at the station.
KTLA’s general manager Janene Drafs announced the firing with a brief speech during a meeting in the newsroom around 1:15 p.m., saying, “[Mester] is no longer at KTLA5.” They have also removed his profile from their database. Mester, Romero’s co-anchor on the weekend morning show on Saturday, deviated from the plan with an emotional remark. In his apology to the audience, he expressed the station’s regret for how Romero’s exit had been handled, calling it “rude, nasty, and inappropriate.”
Mark then apologized to Lynette whom he called, “his best friend.”
He and three of his colleagues delivered a more than four-minute speech, with Mark’s voice occasionally faltering, he said, “You did not deserve this, it was a mistake, and we hope you can find it in your heart to forgive us.” After his suspension, the viewers of their show flooded Twitter.
One wrote, “Mark was 100% in the right. It’s like you guys are begging to lose all your viewers with this kind of behavior.”
Employees claimed that producers had prepared a script for Mark to deliver as they bid Romero farewell, along with images and video snippets from her broadcasts, but Mark chose to ignore it during the segment. Additionally, he had paid for a plane to fly over the station carrying a banner that read, “We love you, Lynette.”
Mark attempted to convince the producers to use footage of the plane in the program, but she was turned down. Staffers said they saw Mester pacing back and forth with an angry look prior to stepping on set for the Saturday segment. He gave heads up to his social media followers that he was planning to address Romero’s departure on that morning’s show.
People in the newsroom claimed that after his program, they observed Mark refuse invitations from management to enter their office for a meeting. Mark allegedly told one of the news directors to “shut up” at one point, and when ordered to leave the building, Mester allegedly refused.
According to LA Times, “several sources at the station said it was common knowledge that staffers were concerned about Mester’s temper and what was described as his “disrespectful” behavior toward women and had complained to management”.
“You would not believe the temper tantrums and the weird things that set him off,” said one longtime newsroom employee. “You’re constantly afraid you’re going to say the wrong thing.”
