Dana Carvey’s oldest son, Dex Carvey, passed away in November 2023 from an accidental drug overdose and left behind his girlfriend Kaylee Chen. Dex and Kaylee spoke very little of their relationship publicly.
According to Distractify, Kaylee mentioned Dex was in June 2021. She tagged her boyfriend and put the caption, “Summers with you @dexcarvey.” Based on the post, they were together for more than 2 years.
Dex is the son of comedian Dana Carvey and Paula Zwagerman. Dana and Paula released a joint statement about the loss of their late son. “Dex packed a lot into those 32 years. He was extremely talented at so many things–music, art, filmmaking, comedy–and pursued all of them passionately. It’s not an exaggeration to say that Dex loved life. And when you were with him, you loved life too. He made everything fun. But most of all, he loved his family, his friends, and his girlfriend Kaylee.”

TMZ was told by law enforcement sources Dex died on Wednesday night after emergency personnel raced to a Los Angeles residence where his girlfriend had made a phone call at approximately ten o’clock in the evening. Dex was found lifeless in a restroom after being trapped inside, according to TMZ. According to their sources, paramedics attempted to revive him but were unable, and he was declared dead at the site. Despite an autopsy, toxicology tests are still needed to identify Dex’s cause of death.
Dana Carvey is one of the greatest comedic talents. When the star of Wayne’s World joined the Saturday Night Live cast in 1986, he won over viewers with his iconic character sketches, which included Church Lady. However, he left the public eye in the late 1990s to raise Dex and Thomas Carvey, his two boys, along with his wife Paula Zwagerman.
At the time of his death, 32-year-old Dex was an actor and comic best known for his part in his father’s 2014 miniseries Beyond the Comics. Dex did not get it into the final cut of his father’s Netflix special Straight White Male, but he did open for it nonetheless.
Dex’s acting credits were The Funster, Beyond the Comics, Joe Dirt 2: Beautiful Loser, and Carpool Pandering. He also performed as his father’s opening act in his 2016 Netflix special, “Straight White Male.” In that show, Dex touched on a variety of subjects, including pride parades, cult tales, and his well-known father, in a 6-minute set that made people laugh.
During the set, he joked about how his brother also went into the business, describing them as the “Von Trapp family of comedy.”
