Owen Johnson is one of the seven male contestants on TV’s Mama Mia! I Have A Dream. He along with other contestants are vying to play Sky Rymand in the West End show based on the music of Abba.
And since the 10-year-old youngster who was scared to tell his school friends that he had seen the first Mamma Mia movie three times in theaters, he has come a long way to become the star of the show.
“That 10-year-old boy who was scared to tell his mates in his classroom that he’d seen Mamma Mia! three times at the cinema would be beside himself,” said Owen. “But this means the world. For so many people who have backed me over the years, I owe it not only to myself but all of them as well. It would be an incredible feeling to win.”
Craig Watson and Stephanie Costi, who sang Take A Chance On Me and Angeleyes, respectively, were eliminated during the double-elimination that took place during the semi-finals that were broadcast on December 3. At the pivotal moment, Johnston chose to showcase his vocals on the ballad When All Is Said And Done, rather than a vocally demanding tune. The judges and the general public commended Owen for his “thoughtful and sensitive” portrayal of the ABBA duo Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Benny Andersson, whose divorce is detailed in the song.
In contrast to what you may assume, there will be two winners in this case since the contestant is also looking for a replacement for Sophie Sheridan in the stage production. Whatever transpires, Owen will be the center of attention, and because the show was filmed in the picturesque setting of the Greek islands, the sun will also be beaming on him.

As a child, his mum took him to London and since then he had a desire to play a lead role in the West End.
“I went into singing lessons when I was about 13, 14 and we sang musical theatre songs there,” he explained. “A few months after starting singing lessons, my mum took me on a trip to London. We went to Leicester Square to pick a West End show to see and went to see Phantom of the Opera. I absolutely fell in love and I just knew that was what I wanted to do.”
