Meet Latrice Bryant, Shilese Jones Mother
Latrice Bryant is the mother of Uneven bar champion Shilese “Shi” Jones. During an exclusive interview with E! Shilese mentioned that “It wouldn’t just be for me and my team, but also for my dad.” More into the interview, she also mentioned her mom.
“My parents were like, ‘Let’s try to put her in a gym.’ And I actually was horrible at the compulsory levels. I lost everything, wasn’t really paying attention.” Shilese said of her mother Latrice and her dad Sylvester. Furthermore, Sylvester led the family’s relocation from Seattle to Columbus, Ohio to assist the enthusiasts for uneven bars in achieving their Olympic dreams.
Her gymnastics had become a family affair. Sylvester, her dad, has what she described as “tremendous health problems,” including having undergone kidney and pancreas transplants. “We’re all pushing together. We’re all in this together,” Shilese told Olympic Channel in 2020. “You take it day by day.”
Shilese and her mother managed to fit in a workout every day. In 2020, she posted a video to Instagram of her mother trying pull-ups for the first time in years, encouraged by their joint trainer.
“I was like, ‘Mom, you should try one!’” recalled Shilese. “She said her goal was three in middle school. She said, ‘I haven’t made one since then.’”
However, after returning to her mother, Jones performed her first pull-ups in a long time at Latrice’s insistence.
Shilese stated that she had always informed her parents that Tokyo would mark the end of her elite career, whether or not she reached it, in an interview with the Olympic Channel earlier in 2022. She would continue with her life and pursue gymnastics in college; she is committed to the University of Florida.
However, falling short caused her to reconsider. Her attention became more acute after Sylvester, her father, passed away in December 2021.

Latrice Bryant was married to Shilese Jones’s father Sylvester Jones Jr.
Sylvester died after a long battle with kidney disease which appears to be his cause of death. He underwent double transplant surgery on March 27, 2017. Sylvester Jones was forty-two years old when he passed. On December 20, 2021, he passed away; he had just turned 42.
Sylvester had a job as a painter, according to one GoFundMe page from 2017 titled Shilese’s Olympic Dream. He reportedly operated his own crew and had done well enough to support Shilese and her sister’s dreams and aspirations.
” But within the past year his health has deteriorated and he now finds himself unable to work and there is no family nearby to help out with living expenses,” the GoFundMe page stated.
Shilese as a tribute to her late dad has tattooed on her back, “Dad, your name echoes in my heartbeat.”
“Missing you🤍 Today marks 6 months without my other half💔 These last 6 months have been the hardest in my life. No words I can write ever say how much I miss you every day. As time goes by, the loneliness grows. How I miss you, nobody ever knows,” in June 2022, she posted. “I think of you in silence, I often speak your name, But all I have are memories and photos in a frame. No one knows my sorrow, no one sees my weep. But the love I have for you is my heart to keep. You brought so much joy and happiness into my life. I’ve suffered so much within these last 6 months without you, that I have lost myself…”
