Captain Greg Wallace On Deadliest Catch
Tuesday, June 11 at 8 PM ET/PT marked the return of the 20th season of the critically acclaimed television program Deadliest Catch, a genre-defining series that follows professional crab fishermen who risk their lives on the unpredictable and dangerous Bering Sea. The 59-time Emmy®-nominated series has transformed unscripted television since its premiere. It captures every heart-stopping moment at sea with storytelling and best-in-class cinematography, enthralling audiences with real, resilient individuals for centuries to come.
The rich Red King Crab fishery in Alaska has finally reopened, sparking the first derby-style competition in decades to begin this historic season. Veteran and rookie captains are forced into fierce rivalries that will test the limits of every crabber as they compete to get their hauls of crab in a very short amount of time. As winter storms intensify due to an uncommon super El Niño weather pattern, the crab grounds become even more dangerous, offering as a sobering reminder of why Alaska crab fishing is dubbed the Deadliest Catch.
In addition to being the Seabrooke’s captain, Captain Greg Wallace will be mentoring someone this season. He has taken Sophia “Bob” Nielsen, the youngest captain in the fleet, under his wings.
“It was my rookie year on my boat, the Victory. And I ended up putting in close to 40,000 pounds. But I blew up my big generator and I got in a collision,” Sophia explained in the Deadliest Catch Season 20 premiere. “I’m in debt $200,000 right now. Which is why I’m trying to home in on my skipper skills and become a better captain.”
Greg knew Sophia’s father and is willing to give his daughter a shot as a skipper-in-training on the 109-foot Seabrooke.
“I met Sophia a few years ago,” he said. “I knew her dad. I had a lot of respect for him when he was alive, and even now. She came at us and wants to learn more, so we’re going to see what we can do to help her out.”
“I think the only reason I had a leg up with Greg was he knew who my dad was,” she said.
However, Greg’s decision to mentor Sophia doesn’t sit well with all of his crew, particularly his daughter Megan, a deckhand on the Seabrooke.
“I had to earn this job,” Sophia’s fellow student Megan said. “I had to work for him for years and really prove myself. She didn’t have to do the same and she’s already up there. So, I don’t know.”
Megan strongly voices that Sophia is not ready. Sophia can see why Megan could be wary of her.
“I would be definitely jealous if it was my dad up here teaching some other young girl how to drive the boat,” Sophia admitted. “I’m super envious of the relationship she has with her father because that’s something I will never get.”
Even though Sophia still has a lot to learn about managing the Seabrooke, a difficult circumstance in the first episode demonstrated her ability to overcome unforeseen difficulties. Megan tripped while handling the crab traps outside and dislocated her hip. Sophia moved to assist Megan, who was in excruciating pain.
“I’m not even supposed to be out here,” Megan confessed to Sophia.
After suffering a prior hip injury, Megan’s doctors advised her to get surgery. But she disregarded their suggestions. Sophia was able to push Megan’s hip back into its socket by consulting Google. However, Megan’s future on Seabrooke is still in doubt.
Greg was prepared to risk everything for Sophia. He won’t be lenient with her, though. He warned, “You won’t be sitting there long if you can’t improve.” “It really is that easy.”
