The 2020 pandemic was hard on everybody. Thanks to this, MillerKnoll also took a hit and was unable to satisfy its staff with bonuses in 2023. On top of disappointing them, the CEO of the furniture brand Andi Owen even scolded the workers complaining about bonuses — although she made $1.2M in extra compensation in 2022. Obviously, this called for a lot of hate, so much so that the CEO had to deactivate her socials.

Herman Miller CEO Andi Owen Slammed Over Bonus Comments
In April 2023, a video of Andi Owen surfaced where she told her staffers, “Questions came through about, ‘How can we stay motivated if we’re not going to get a bonus…What can we do? What can we do?’”
“Some of them were nice, and some of them were not so nice,” she added before answering the question herself. “The most important thing we can do right now is focus on the things that we can control.”
The CEO then continued to talk about how COVID-19 affected the supply chain and none of them could have predicted bank failures. “But what we can do, is stay in front of our customers, provide the best customer service we can get our orders out our door, treat each other well, be kind, be respectful, focus on the future because it will be bright,” she added.
The video was going well up until this point when suddenly, she said, “Don’t ask about, ‘What are we going to do if we don’t get a bonus?’ Get the damn $26 million dollars,”
“Spend your time and your effort thinking about the $26 million dollars we need and not thinking about what you’re going to do if you don’t get a bonus. Alright? Can I get some commitment for that?”
Obviously, this wasn’t the pep talk employees were expecting. Furthermore, to make things worst, she shared an anecdote about a lecture she received from an old employer. “I had an old boss who said, ‘You can visit pity city, but you can’t live there,’”
“So, people, leave pity city! Let’s get it done,” she remarked.
Naturally, the internet went crazy as the video went viral.
“This is a perfect illustration of the self-delusion people like Andi Owen engage in. Watch to the end,” a Tweet read.
