So, Asser Malik made Malala his wife in a small nikkah ceremony at home in Birmingham with their families.
The news of the ceremony, shared by Malala, was liked tens of thousands of times by her fans online.
Although the nikkah ceremony is not a legally binding contract. It is the first step in an Islamic marriage. Usually, a separate ceremony is carried out privately. However, it was not understood, if the new bride and groom also had a separate civil ceremony.
This must have come as a surprise to many as Malala previously voiced her doubts around marriage. She used to say: “If you want to have a person in your life, why do you have to sign marriage papers, why can’t it just be a partnership?”. So, her mom’s frequent — “Don’t you dare say anything like that! You have to get married, marriage is beautiful” — must have helped change her mind in some way.
So, at the time of this writing, it was not clear for how long the two have known each other as both have been private about their relationship. Still, from the look of social media, they seem to have known each other since at least July 2019. Around that time, Asser had shared a group selfie on his Instagram of himself cheering for Pakistan at the Edgaston Stadium in Birmingham, and Malala of course was with him. He even had tagged the I am Malala author in the caption.
One can put the two and two together about how they met, also from the fact that Malala is a self-proclaimed cricket fan and Asser is also clearly a cricket fanatic.
