Robert Sr. was born on 17 February 1930 and later died on 27 March 2008 because of kidney cancer. He was born in Chicago the fourth of five sons, and his mother died when he was a young boy. His father remarried and the family grew up in Beth Eden Baptist Church. While at Morgan Park High School, he took piano lessons and started the Morgan Park Crusaders choral group.

As for his mother, Frances Wooten was born on 26 September 1934 and died on 29 September 2010. She was a member of the choral ensemble.

Robert Sr. was hired as a music teacher by the Chicago Public Schools and started at an elementary school before he joined Parker High School as choral director. There, he led the school to numerous awards and distinctions. He was a mentor to teachers at DuSable High School until he retired in 1994.

Also, Robert Sr. received a master’s of science in music education from Roosevelt University in 1968. He also received an honorary doctorate of music from the Virginia College and Seminary in 1983.
