Carolyn Michelle Smith attended an international private elementary school in the Washington, DC area as a child. In 2002, she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre from Fordham University at Lincoln Center in New York.
In 2008, Carolyn joined the prestigious Juilliard School, where she studied Theatre Arts. She also learned about acting and theatre in the British-American Drama Academy’s Midsummer at Oxford.
Upon graduation, Carolyn was cast in Katori Hall’s newest play ‘WHADDABLOODCLOT!!!’ at Williamstown Theatre Festival. Then, she made her Off-Broadway debut in “Hit The Wall” at The Barrow Street Theatre.
Carolyn’s Broadway debut came in the 2013 production of Romeo and Juliet starring Orlando Bloom and Condola Rashad directed by David Leveaux. Some of Carolyn’s other theatre credits include Soldier X (Ma-Yi Theatre Company, NYC) and Serial. Black. Face (Juilliard/Signature Theatre, NYC).
In 2014, Carolyn joined Netflix’s award-winning series House of Cards starring Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright. She played the role of Willa Penton, chief of staff for Claire Underwood (Robin Wright), in Seasons 2 and 3 of the show.
The Chi star has also worked with Oscar Award-winning director Steve McQueen in HBO’s Codes of Conduct and Producer and Director Jonathan Starch in NBC’s Law and Order.
Carolyn starred in another hit Netflix show, Russian Doll Season 2, playing the role of Agnes, grandmother of Alan (Charlie Barnett).
Some of Carolyn’s other acting credits include Cherish The Day, Luke Cage, The Oath, Colony, How to Get Away with Murder, and Code Black, to name a few.
