Cian O’Clery On Netflix’s Love on the Spectrum
Season 1 of Netflix’s Love on the Spectrum US, a four-part docuseries, was released on May 18, 2022. Though the show premiered in Australia in 2019, Love on the Spectrum later won over a global audience when it debuted on Netflix in 2020 in Australia.
After Love on the Spectrum’s two seasons received high praise from critics and fans alike, creator, director, and executive producer Cian O’Clery started talking to Netflix about bringing the idea to the country. The idea of working on an American adaptation of Love on the Spectrum immediately attracted the veteran director.
Throughout the show, the reality dating program follows individuals on the autistic spectrum as they search for love and negotiate their ideal partnerships. Love on the Spectrum has become incredibly popular with fans throughout its two Australian seasons. Filming for the third season took place in the US. Producer and director Cian O’Clery was motivated to export the format to another nation by the show’s popularity.
Cian O’Clery, who directed the participants through the experience in the original, is still in front of the camera in the American version, as fans of the show will recognize. In order to meet with some of the cast members and provide them with some guidance and ideas before to their dates, he enlists the assistance of autism specialist Jennifer Cook, who herself is on the spectrum.
“The opportunity came up, and we were really happy to get involved,” Cian exclusively revealed to Distractify. “We’re just really happy to hopefully reach even more people and to showcase the diversity of autism. It’s so great to be able to tell real people’s stories, to give people a voice themselves.”
“It’s just introducing people to a really diverse group of people so that an audience understands that autism looks different in every single person. It’s just great and lovely to be able to have a series about dating on TV that features real people as well, who aren’t trying to get something out of being on the show,” Cian said about what he wants people to take away from the show. “They’re not trying to gain followers. They’re just real people going through real life and a real-life dating experience.”
“Cian has created is this warm environment where everybody is genuinely cheering for each other, which is so atypical in the reality sphere,” his partner Jennifer added. “That was super special.”
