On 2 June 2022, Season 19 of Bravo’s Top Chef officially wrapped up with a fierce final challenge. And naturally, though all of the final contestants deserved to become “Top Chef” this season, only one was claimed as the victor.
After Damarr Brown‘s shocking elimination in the penultimate episode, only chefs Evelyn Garcia, Sarah Welch, and Buddha Lo got the chance to cook for the “Top Chef” title in Tucson, Arizona. And though it was Buddha who in the first place the two runner-ups have been loved as much.

Evelyn Garcia did not get to take home the main “Top Chef” prize of $250,000. But, she did win many hearts and also won the “Top Chef” fan favorite award for the season alongside Damarr Brown. And as a result, both of them won a cash prize of $10,000. Voting for this specific competition closed on June 2, the day that the finale aired. Yet the result was not revealed until June 5.
Both Evelyn and Chicagoan Damarr had made it to Tucson to compete in the first round of the finale. And afterward, when his pork shoulder with chiltepin barbecue sauce fell short in comparison to the dishes created by the other chefs, Damarr was sent home just before the final game. Evelyn, on the other hand, got lucky to at least compete in the finale.
The night that she lost to Buddha, she stopped by her local news outlet Houston Life to chat about her “incredible” journey on the show.
Evelyn Garcia Career
Evelyn García’s passion for food started at a young age. And it has since taken her around the world. She graduated from Cypress Ridge High School, was a member of the Cy-Fair Culinary Academy during her senior year, and there, she learned how to make dishes outside of the Mexican and Salvadorian cuisine she knew well. And today, she specializes in Southeast Asian cuisine. But this certainly does not mean that she can not cook other foods.
Taking a further interest in food, Evelyn earned her associate’s degree in culinary arts and her bachelor’s degree in hospitality management at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park; all the while, she also balanced her part-time chef’s assistant position at the school and took catering jobs to earn extra money.
Only thereafter was the beginning of her chef career in New York. Evelyn worked under chef Anthony Ricco at the now-closed Spice Market for a year; before going for the smaller scene at the city’s open-kitchen Singaporean restaurant, Masak under chef Larry Reutens. From here, she worked with Top Chef season one winner Harold Dieterle as a junior sous chef at New York’s modern Thai restaurant Kin Shop.
Evelyn then returned to Houston where she, as of 2022, was the co-owner and chef behind Kin HTX, an eatery providing catering and a Southeast Asian product line of spices and condiments.
