Who Are Golda Rosheuvel Parents?
Golda Rosheuvel’s parents Judith Evan and Siegfried Rosheuvel met in Barbados. Siegfried was there for a music event and Judith was the niece of the then Bishop of Barbados. “Music and performance have always been a big part of my life growing up. My parents met while singing together in a choir in Barbados, for example.”
After some courtship, the couple moved to Guyana, where Siegfried was working as a missionary, in the late 1960s. They reportedly married in Bartica, where Siegfried’s parents lived. Then the married couple moved to Skeldon where he worked as an assistant priest. The family then moved to Enmore followed by Mahaica. Then, their next stop was Anna Regina in Essequibo.
Despite this, interracial marriages were frowned upon both in Guyana and around the world at the time, which is why Rosheuvel’s parents’ love story is so inspiring to her.
“I remember my parents being in love,” Rosheuvel reminisced during an interview with supermodel Naomi Campbell for her web show No Filter with Naomi. “My parents left me very, very grounded. Both me and my brother have good heads on our shoulders and good feet on the earth, and I’m so proud to call them my mother and father.”
During the series of demanding travel because of her father’s job, Golda was born to her parents in Georgetown, Guyana in 1970. The actress shared: “My mom would tell me stories of my dad going with her, and me there as a babe on my mom’s back and we’d be going into the bush for like two weeks with the tribes and administer holy communion for the indigenous people. And there’d be a baptism or a marriage that had been timed around his visits.”
She has resided in the UK since the family relocated there in 1975. She still feels a strong connection to her Guyanese heritage, though. The actress spoke of her heritage: “We’d have our pepper pot. Our garlic pork, at Christmas. I still have my cook-up rice, my chicken curry. And then we’d have our afternoon teas, with the scones with our clotted cream and jam.”
Golda continued by describing the difficulties they encountered when they were first married and how they shaped the way she grew up to view the world and them. “[I]n Guyana, that’s the feeling that I always had with my parents: of being super, super proud of their journey, of their struggle, being a mixed-race couple back in the day. It wasn’t easy for them.”
Her life’s narrative has always been about finding a balance between her two cultures. Rosheuvel feels that as a biracial lesbian thespian, she may serve as a source of inspiration for people in Guyana. She is well conscious of the potential impact her profession may have on Guyanese both inside and outside the creative sectors.
“I am happy to be here to celebrate the artists, to celebrate the LGBT community in Guyana. With my story, it becomes possible to walk the road you want to walk. It becomes possible to tread in my footsteps. It becomes possible to dream.”
In March 2021, Golda posted on her IG, “Tough week this week with both birthdays of my Mum and Dad. Mum today and Dad was Monday. We miss you. R.I.P.”
