Up-and-coming rap star Imani Lewis, also known by her stage name Mocha Bands, when paving her own way in Hip Hop has instead landed on Netflix’s series First Kill playing vampire hunter Calliope. Imani Lewis On Netflix’s First Kill
Netflix’s First Kill is a lesbian vampire show based on a short story by V. E. Schwab. It follows teenage vampire Juliette (actress Sarah Catherine Hook of American Crime Story) and Imani’s character Calliope.
“I immediately fell in love with the story of the show in general”, Imani said of playing Calliope before the show premiered on 10 June 2022. Also because First Kill marks her first time as a lead, she said it gave her a feeling of kinship with Calliope. She said she resonates with Calliope in so many different ways and so she tried to perform her consulting other movies and shows in the genre but did not lean on them too hard. She just wanted to make Calliope her own.
Sarah’s Juliette has sights on new girl Calliope when it is time to make her first kill. And if she accomplishes (which she will not!) that will help her come of age in her vampire family. Also, Juliette at first is unaware that Calliope is not a regular human but actually a hunter from a family of monster slayers. So, Calliope also happens to have been encouraged to make her first kill. And things naturally get complicated when these two enemies who are supposed to kill each other instead start to fall for each other.
Imani Lewis Career
Rapper/actress, Imani Lewis is really the Jill of all trades. She started making music when she was 11. That was also when she started taking things seriously and doing things like performing at the Apollo Theater. Imani did it into her teenage years, and one day, she had a performance at SOBs. A talent agent encouraged her to get into acting. He told me to give it a shot. So, she did an audition and landed The Get Down, a TV series, in 2017. She says it has just been free sailing from there. It also helped when she started to look at artists like Jay-Z, Nas, Biggie, Fabolous, and Lauryn Hill as her inspirations. She also grew up admiring Foxy Brown/Lil Kim, Nicki Minaj, and Queen Latifah.
Imani has previously appeared in series such as Hightown and Flatbush Misdemeanors, and she was recognized best for her performance as Aniyah in the 2018 feature Eighth Grade. She also appeared in the 2020 feature film The Forty-Year-Old Version, Alternatino with Arturo Castro, Wu-Tang: An American Saga, Vampires vs. the Bronx, Shoplifters of the World, and Killer Among Us.
As for her music career, Imani always had a super motivating team behind her. They always encouraged her to keep writing, assuring her that they would handle the rest. She did just that and people listening to her started picking up, and then more and more people in her neighborhood and outside her neighborhood started listening to her music. And when she started putting it on all different platforms, her name started to ring bells.
