Actress Lola Tung is making her on-screen debut as Isabella “Belly” Conklin. Isabella or Belly is a teenage girl who spends her summers in an idyllic beach town with her family, where she finds herself in a love triangle with family friends, brothers Conrad (Christopher Briney), and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno). Along the way, she also comes of age and goes through a journey of self-discovery.

Lola Tung shared her experience of landing the show with NewYorker. “Jenny Han, who’s the showrunner, creator, and author of the books [the show is based on] delivered the news to me over Zoom,” She told the outlet. “I kind of froze and had a little bit of a freakout moment. It was so unbelievable, it was special.”
It was either The Summer I Turned Pretty or school for Lola, but she chose this project.
“I think, you know, the school had been so important to me too and I’m so grateful for everything that I learned while I was there because I did get to finish a year at Carnegie Melon, my first year, and that community was so supportive when I booked this but you know I kind of had that realization with this that was just going to something so incredibly life-changing and just like a wonderful learning experience that I really didn’t want to pass up,” she told Brief Take.
She added, “Because I did learn so much that I wouldn’t have learned otherwise on a set and being surrounded by people of different levels of experience and I learned so much from the crew and I learned so much from Jenny and from the other actors that I was surrounded by and I think it’s been such as privilege to play belly and I’m so grateful that I get to do it again this summer in a second season”.
Lola shared that she established such good bonds with her casts outside of filming. She became friends with her fellow actors including Rain Spencer who plays Taylor.
Over the course of filming, the pair became very close as they played fictional BFFs. Tung said to Pop Sugar, “I remember our last night of filming together was so much fun, and we were just laughing hysterically, I don’t even know what we were laughing about.” She added, “And I’m very excited to keep exploring that relationship in season two.”
The show just premiered and Lola has been renewed for the second season.

“I took a little bit from my own life and my own experience of being a teenager and feeling all of the feelings that she had at the same time,” she told the outlet. “Even though I was never in a love triangle, in the same way, there was sort of an understanding of what it’s like to be 16. Every interaction is the biggest thing in the world. I was able to bring some of myself to [Isabel], especially in this specific summer. This is the time that she’s really figuring out who she is and coming into her own and trying to find this sense of independence and sense of self”.
She added, “I could relate to that since I’m 19”. Lola is so good of an actress that her chemistry with the boys makes her fans feel that she might’ve been romantically linked in a similar depth in real life that she drew all her inspiration from it. But, that’s not the case and one shouldn’t confuse on-screen romance with real-life romance. Though she could’ve been madly in love before her career sky-rocketed we don’t know about it.

Lola Tung Family
The only known family at this point is Lola Tung’s mother Pia Tung. Pia once worked as a graphics operator. The mother-daughter duo lived in Murray Hill. On International Women’s Day 2018, she posted on her IG, “Mamma, I love you. I hope that someday I’ll be as badass as you”.
Speaking with PopSugar, Lola shared that she called her mother first after landing the role. “I was thrilled and shocked, and I called my mom afterward crying. And we celebrated together over the phone”.
Pia bought her the whole book series after she locked down the part. “I read all of them, and I remember finishing the third one on my roof in my building,” Tung recalls. “And I had a very emotional moment, like a one-tear moment. . . . I was so excited to bring Belly’s journey to life.”
Back in 2014, Pia was interviewed by New York Post after she enrolled Lola in the ASPCA program which helped young girls learn leadership skills. Lola joined the program after looking for an extracurricular activity to help her build her confidence and learn to be more assertive.
“It helped me a lot in helping puppies,” said Lola. “It taught me that I have a voice and I can use it”.
Pia witnessed her daughter grow more self-assured during the program. “Lola is less fearful of speaking her mind [now]”, said Pia. “She’s more aware of the fact that she can actually make a difference”.
